  • Forcing RPC/HTTPS clients to update CA server

I am doing a single server Ex2010 Migration to a 3 Server group

2 Will be in a DAG, 1 will be HT/CAS.

In addition 1 of the DAGs will be a manual failover for CAS.

I have created a CAS array with all the CAS servers. The new databases are assigned to use the cas name as their primary.

When I move users over they continue to work, but do not update to use the array, they continue to use the old server. I hope to be able to decommission that server.

I have found that new accounts point correctly, and if you click the "repair" button it updates, however with 200 remote users across the US I would prefer not to do this manually.

Is there any way to kick this change off remotely from the exchange server? Also I can push scripts out to the clients, is there a command line option to force this update?

Re: Forcing RPC/HTTPS clients to update CA server

At the current time there is no way to force clients to use the RPC CAS Array. Manual intervention in the form of repair of Outlook profile is required.

Microsoft's answer to this is to remove the old server completely from the domain and then allow autodiscover to kick in, although I am yet to be convinced that will work reliably (and it is impossible to test because it only works if the server has gone away permanently).

That's what I was afraid of, and I don't really want to turn it off and hope.

If a DNS record is created with the old name and pointed to one of the new servers will it keep it functioning?

Considering that a RPC CAS Array is pretty much JUST a DNS record with an extra entry in Exchange, there is no reason why it shouldn't work. I haven't tested it yet. You would still need to remove the old server because otherwise Exchange is going to get very confused if it it knows the server is there but it resolves somewhere else!
