  • Sometimes inbound mail fails for one user

We have a new Exchange 2010 deployment and for one of our users, inbound mail sometimes does not reach him and the recipient receives a returned mail.

I have sent numerous test from external email accounts and he receives all of these emails. Sometimes the sender is able to resend their message and he will receive it.

I can't figure out why it is only one user and why it only fails some of the time.

This is the latest message that failed to make it to him:

Difficult to say without knowing more about the congret installation. Is any other SMTP server such as Anti-Spam solutions involved or are you suing any software for Ani-Virus and -Spam at the Exchange server?

Also look at the blocked sender list of that user.

I suspect that's either a client-side issue, or an issue with the remote server.
I say this because the error message states that the connection to the server timed out. I'd expect to see it happening for more people..

Re: Sometimes inbound mail fails for one user

        tehcamel,

You are right, this is happening with more users. I setup a test AOL account and found that about 1 in 10 emails makes it through to our mail server but most bounce back with the same error message.

I've used the tools from AOL's postmaster troublehsooting site and haven't received anything that indicates a problem.

I opened a ticket with AOL postmaster but don't really expect to hear replies anytime soon.

Any other thoughts or test you recommend I run?

        Thanks

Re: Sometimes inbound mail fails - Solved

          Hi all,

Hopefully this helps anyone else. This issue turned out to be not just one user. It just appeared that way.

Email from AOL was not being received by one user 90% of the time. The first test message to a second user was received so it appeared that it was just one user. Further test showed that it was network wide.

AOL postmaster DID reply stating that their outbound mail servers needed to be added to an allowed list.

Using the Shell command Add-IPAllowListEntry -IPAddress you can easily specify the IPs to allow. Here are the commands I ran per the AOL postmaster IP list.

          It worked! postmaster.aol [dot-com] /Postmaster.OMRs

          Add-IPAllowListEntry -IPAddress 205.188.105.143
          Add-IPAllowListEntry -IPAddress 205.188.105.144
