    Hi
    We have just started to see outgoing to the internet messages getting queued up. Every thing was fine until 2 days ago. Incoming and internal mail is ok. We get the following error in the queue viewer on the Ex2k10 box
    451 4.4.0 Primary target IP address responded with "421 4.2.1 Unable to connect. "Attempted to failover to alternate host, but that did not succeed. Either there are no alternate hosts, or delivery failed to all altenate host.

    any ideas

    Please do read "Warning" section under Resolution before making any changes. If the change fixes the issue then you should consider checking your firewalls Mailgaurd features and make changes according to guidance provided by device manufacturer.

    Which box have you used telnet testing?

    If it's something from your own infrastructure we are talking about a smarthost, if it's the mail server from google mail the answer is expected. No one (at least mail admins with some brain) will let you relay through their servers.

    it's all out going, incoming is ok and internal is ok
    If I telnet to the box after I enter rcpt to:[email protected] i get the responce
    550 5.7.1 unable to relay

    Is it just for gmail or is it for all outgoing mail?

    we are not blacklisted.
    The mail (going to gmail) is not even getting to the asa firewall. After running the troubleshooting assistant under Remote SMTP Status we see
    Name: alt1.gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com
    Port 25 did not respond on server alt1.gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com. Unless the SMTP port has been changed on alt1.gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com, mail flow problem will occurr. and
    Mail acceptance failure:
    Remote server alt1.gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com failed the mail acceptance test when trying to open the remote socket: Respond = remote socket is not available

    is this for ALL outgoing messages?
    If so, are you blacklisted?

    (are you using some sort of external firewall / spam filter / proxy as a smarthost from Exchange?)

    Are you using a smarthost or direct delivery?

    I'm guessing a smarthost, if so, check with the provider if they have changed things without bothering to tell you, and change to direct delivery for the moment
