  • how to forward message between 2 exchange server 2010

hi all, my office is setting up a DR site and already set 2 exchange server for DAG.

now, my boss ask me to find out about the possibilities of setting up the Passive Exchange to forward messages from the DR site to the Active Exchange, so he wants all email from the DR site going to the Passive Exchange and then the Passive Exchange send it to the Active Exchange for sending/receiving.

Is it possible to do this kind of thing? If possible, can anyone please tell me how to do it roughly or shed some light to my brain, i really don't have a clue about this

    many thanks in advance.

Can you post a diagram showing which servers are where -- is the passive one in the DR site?

If you have created a DAG with an mailbox server (which is member of the dag) in each site, the logs are shipped to both mailbox servers. And each database would consistant (if no log replay delay is configured). That is the idea of a DAG.

hi Ossian, the Passive one is not in the DR site, its in another site (a server farm).

so the situation is like this :

site no 1 -> Active Exchange Server (in Head Quarter) -> lets call it site A

site no 2 -> Passive Exchange Server (in a secondary site - a server farm) -> lets call it site B

site no 3 -> DR site -> lets call it site C

how to get all email from site C going to site A thru site B. So site A going to do the send-receive activity to outside world.

i hope this would help to explain my situation.

        thank you

Additional info, all these exchange servers are under 1 AD. I hope this helps to explain what i mean.

          thanks all for your response.

What you need is a DAG. This will require Enterprise Edition of Windows on both sides, but can be run with Standard edition of Exchange.
This will replicate the database to the other location automatically.

Obviously there is a lot more to it, if you aren't sure, the best option would be to get a consultant in, as there are many things to consider.

You can't just forward the email to another server though.

Hi Simon, the DAG already setup, and it already worked. And yes already trying to find consultant, but so far don't find a good one, so for now have to ask around to find the solution.

In your opening post you wrote about "all email from the DR site", can you specifiy what this means?

It can't be Outlook clients since this would connect to the active exchange even sitting in the DR site,so it must be some kind of incoming gateway or relay?

hi FischFra, it means all email will be send using outlook in the DR site clients.

If your DAG is already setup, then I don't understand what the question is.
As long as you have a Hub Transport server role in both locations, Exchange will deal with the delivery of the email to the Active server. You can deliver email to any Exchange server with the Hub transport role in the Exchange org and it will be delivered. There is nothing to configure, it just happens.

I do this now with a client. All their email comes in via the passive server in the data centre, so in the event of a failure the email queues out there rather than trying to deliver in to the office. It also means the traffic is coming in via a faster connection.

                    Simon.

                      hi Simon, thx for replying

so you mean if i already have Hub Transport setup on the Passive Exchange, i only need to connect the client on the DR site to the Passive Exchange? no need to configure anything else?

Hub transport has nothing to do with client access. Hub Transport is SMTP, where the emails pass through.

For client access, you need to look at the documentation about how clients interact with Exchange 2010. If you are using a DAG then you should really have a CAS array as well, so that clients can be directed to the second server in the event of a problem.
