  • SBS to Separate Exchange/DC.

    Hello,

Our business has grown and we'll be hitting our 75 user limit for SBS2008 shortly. I have decided to do the migration in chucks, firstly moving exchange to a dedicated server. I am a network infrastructure guy first and foremost but think I'll be able to accomplish this for the business. How easy will it be to

    • move exchange 2007 (on the SBS) to exchange 2010 on another purpose built box.
    • ensure clients are pointing to the new exchange server immediately? Does outlook version effect this? I was the migration to be totally transparent to the end-user.

you need to look into a swing migration kit.

You don't need the swing migration kit if going to full product.
Simply install Exchange 2010, create the CAS array and DNS host. Replicate Public Folders if you using them or Outlook 2003.
Then once done, move the mailboxes using the move mailbox wizard on Exchange 2010. The clients will redirect themselves to the CAS array host.

You then need to go though the process to remove Exchange 2007, such as moving OAB etc to the new server.

          Shouldn't do.
The wizards can't be used for the new user creation though.

It is removing the domain controller functionality that will cause SBS to throw a hissy fit.
