  • exchange 2007 cannot send or receive emails from all domains on the internet

    hi expert
    i have one server where exchange 2007 with all the roles (except the edge) are installed also i have a forfront role installed on the same server.
    i am able to receive emails from many domains such as hotmail, yahoo and many others while i am not able to receive emails from others.
    for example
    i can send emails to sgbl.com while i am not able to receive emails from them.
    my mx record is hold by the ISP.
    my external domain name is the same as the internal one

    when i do
    -> nslookup
    ->set type=MX
    -> the FQDN of my domain

    i get my external ip address

    and when i do
    -> nslookup
    ->set type=PTR
    ->public ip address

    i get the correct FQDN of my mail server.

    also when i try to send an email from a domain between the ones that my domain is not receiving emails
    even when selecting a delivery report i don't get any reply nor a postmaster message so i don't have any error number

    but when i try to send an email from another domain which is also between the ones that my domain is not receiving email i get the following error

    also i can telnet the server from outside using port 25 (by the fqdn of mail server or by external ip address) and i can send message (from the telnet session) using as sender an address that belong to one of the domain that cannot send emails to me

    NOTE: on my internal DNS the MX record is pointing the internal ip of email server not the public one

    please expert assist where could be my problem?

    Re: exchange 2007 cannot send or receive emails from all domains on the Internet

    All that you have posted is a delay message. That doesn't help at all.
    If you are able to receive emails from other domains then it is unlikely to be a DNS issue. It is more likely to be a network or routing issue between your ISP and the site hosting the remote server. Getting it resolved on the other hand is a different matter, as you will need to prove where the problem is.

      Re: exchange 2007 cannot send or receive emails from all domains on the internet

      hi simon
      yes but what test can make me sure where the problem exist?
      i have tried to test my smtp connection using many website and all the test didn't report any problem.
      i have noticed something wearied from one of the domain that i cannot receive emails i went to the owa of that domain and i have sent an email and the email was received. does this mean anything?
      also it could be a routing problem while i am able to send to a domain but i am not able to receive from it?

        Re: exchange 2007 cannot send or receive emails from all domains on the Internet

        Until the email arrives on your server, there is very little that you can do about it. If you can get on to one of the remote ISPs and do some trace route or telnet tests, then you might be able to prove to the ISP that there is a problem. However most ISPs will not accept that there is a problem with their network.

        If you can send email via OWA then that would tend to show the email flow is possible, at least some of the time.

        The problem may well be with the interconnects with your ISP, but asking them to diagnose it is almost impossible.

        This is not an Exchange issue. While I understand it is frustrating, that is the Internet for you. If you can't get it resolved, find another ISP or route your email in via another source (a hosted antispam service). They you don't have to worry about connectivity from other servers, which you don't control.

          Re: exchange 2007 cannot send or receive emails from all domains on the internet

          hi simon
          thanks for your reply
          you are right the mail of owa just get to my mail server one time the second time i didn't receive it.
          so what i will do is checking the smtp log to check if a connection is starting or no.
          but i tried to telnet the server even from outside the country and it also it works it is really strange problem.
          so if i am able to telnet my server from everywhere does it means that there is no isp problem?
          do you have an idea how to disable reverse dns lookup on exchange 2007?

            the problem appears to be more complicates
            the email appears in the smtp log but nevere received by the user and cannot find it using message tracking.
            also the emails is received if it is sent from owa or iphone but not received if sent from outlook which use pop3 or from lotus note for example
            i have disabled anti-spam also i have connected my exchange server directly to internet to do a test but same result.
            do you have any ideas?

              Re: exchange 2007 cannot send or receive emails from all domains on the Internet

              The log only shows the connection, but nothing else. If the message is not in Message Tracking then it wasn't received by Exchange.
              That is classic interference. Anti-spam, Anti-virus, firewall scanning SMTP traffic, something like that. Cisco firewalls are notorious for causing these kinds of problems, and AV not configured with the correct exclusions can also cause odd things to happen.

                  Re: exchange 2007 cannot send or receive emails from all domains on the internet

                  What kind of internet connection are you using? Probably some hardware like router or firewall interfering the SMTP Traffic.

                  The configuration of the receive connector looks normal, so you have to search at other parts for the cause of this error.

                    hi again
                    i have removed the router and the firewall and i have connected the exchange directly to the receiver of the isp and the problem still exists.
                    is it possible to be caused on the isp side? or by the receiver that exists on my site?
                    is there a way to check exactly where the packet is dropped?

                      This is a sign of interference.

                      2011-06-30T11:02:00.415Z,MNH-LDA-MSX-01\mail.medianova.co.ao,08CE0399416106AE,21,172.16 .0.6:25,62.161.7.1:60593,>,451 4.7.0 Timeout waiting for client

                      Could be the ISP, but it is impossible to know, because the problem is interference. That isn't going to be logged.
