  • Outlook 2007 mail profile not resolving the username to a mailbox

We are in the middle of an upgrade to 2008 R2 AD and transition to Exhcange 2010. Exchange 2010 has been in the environment for 6 months and all mailboxes (apart from 2) still reside in Exchange 2003. The reason for the wait is due to other projects taking place. Exhcange 2010 CAS/HUB is on one server and mailbox role on another Exchange 2010 server.

Last week, two 2003 DCs were removed from the domain and FSMO roles were transferred from another 2003 DC (currently still in the domain) to one of the new 2008 R2 DCs.

Since then, the Outlook 2007 will not resolve to a mailbox for two mailboxes that are currently hosted on the Exchange 2010 server. They were fine prior to the changes. When running through the wizard for the first time to create a profile and reaching the username/mailbox resolution stage, the following error occurs.

    ---------------------------
    Microsoft Office Outlook
    ---------------------------
Outlook cannot log on. Verify you are connected to the network and are using the proper server and mailbox name. The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action.
    ---------------------------
    OK
    ---------------------------

    I have verified the following.

    (1) Creating a new mailbox on Exchange 2010 you have the same problem.
    (2) OWA works.
    (3) Exchange 2003 is unaffected
    (4) Exchange 2010 only references the two new 2008 DCs. The 2003 DC that used to have the FSMO roles is no longer stated
    (5) If I run a Best Practice Analyser, it does refer to the 2003 DC and it appears that it is getting its main configuraration from that DC.
    (6) RPC is set to not enforce encryption due to some Outlook 2003 clients still being around
    (7) It is currently using a self-signed certificate. A 3rd Party one will be installed soon, however, the SSL certificate has not changed since the issue.
(Eight) You can ping the server by name when the issue happens. From the client machine and Exchange servers.

    Any advice appreciated.

    Update to this one.

We have also tested using the IP of the Exchnage server and of the DC, to see if it resolves hte username to a mailbox.

Doing this is a job done by the global catalog servers, so the question is what the configuration on this part looks like.

Are both new W2k8 DCs GCs as well? Are the srv ressource records set correctly and so on?

Re: Outlook 2007 mail profile not resolving the username to a mailbox

Thanks for the post. They are both GCs and all records have replicated across ok. If the 2003 DC is powered off, no-one on the network is effected and Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2010 services remain active.

Another test has now been carried out. The mailbox can be added to an existing Outlook profile and opens up ok. However, despite allocating 'send on behalf of' permissions, it doesn't allow it to happen.

Does autodiscover return the correct information?
          Outlook 2007 fully patched?

Re: Outlook 2007 mail profile not resolving the username to a mailbox

Thanks for the post back. I don't seem to get that far. When I left click the right hand side Ctrl and then right click on the Outlook icon in the notification tray and then Test Email Autoconfiguration, nothing appears. It does for Outlook on a profile that works for Exchange 2003. I have even tried manually putting in the settings.

Even though Exchange 2010 only references the new 2008 R2 DCs via the Management Console, when you run the Best Practices analyser, it also refers to the existing 2003 DC that used to have the FSMO roles. All the DCs are GCs.

I will verify that it is fully patched. The strange thing is that it worked before and the mailbox was being used via Outlook. It stopped working after removing two 2003 DCS from the domain, which also hosted DNS and transferring FSMO roles to one of the 2008 DCs. Exchange 2003 has been unaffected.

              That is odd behaviour.
Would tend to indicate an issue with the machine and the domain, because autodiscover internally queries the domain for information. I am not a good enough expert on the Outlook side to know why the autodiscover part fails.
