  • What would be the default gateway of a exchange server in 2008

what would be the default gateway of an exchange server placed in an 2008 domain environment. the exchange server is placed in the dmz of the network. the exchange server has 2 nic cards. one with private ip for access to internal lan users and another with public ip for owa access from internet. the perimeter of the n/w is protected by a firewall. all dc and other servers are placed in the inside n/w. the gateway for dc, and servers is the firewall. but for exchange server in dmz what would be the default gateway. thanks

the default gateway would be the route of last resort - ie, where ever the computer will send traffic if it can't do bitwise calculations to find it on it's own subnet, and if it doesn't have a specific route.

You can find the information by doing an ipconfig /all

of course, as to what the specifics are for your environment, well, who knows.

the gateway of the last resort in the n/w is the firewall. my thoughts are if the exchange server if given the firewall ip as gateway how would it contact the DC since i want to place the DC and Exchange in a different subnet and also they are in different vlans.
My Exchange is in DMZ and DC is in internal n/w. thanks

Oh I understand completely your confusion.

You can't give it the firewall as the gateway because then it can't access the internal lan.
And you can't give it the internal LAN because then it can't respond to requests for OWA.

You need to discuss your requirements with your internal comms team. I know of a couple of ways your aim could be acheived.. but I don't know your environment so I'm not willing to suggest them.

Exchange in a DMZ is a non-supported configuration.
A dual homed Exchange server is also troublesome, and I am pretty sure also not supported.

The only role that is supported in a DMZ is the Edge server. Nothing else.

I would therefore suggest that you flatten the network, and use a single NIC and NAT. If you can't go straight through the firewall (but you are in the current configuration) then you will need to deploy TMG/ISA.
