  • Migrating from 2003 to 2010

We are in the process of moving our whole domain from 2k3 to 2k8 R2.

As part of this we will also upgrade Exchange from 2k3 to 2k10.

I'm looking for a bit of guidance as to the best way to go about this so I can start testing and planning.

I have built a number of spare "servers" (just high spec'ed PCs) so can stage upgrades and test processes etc.

What is the best way to move from 2k3 to 2k10 with the least problems?

We have a single 2k3 server on a 2k3 box with approx 350 mailboxes in a single store (roughly 30-35GB).

We also use public folders in 2k3 for various room booking calendars.

A growing number of staff connect to their mail/contacts/calendar on their iPhone and this will continue (and grow) in the future.

All clients are Outlook 2003 (and will remain so for the time being), and we do not use OWA (but might in the future).

I need to re-use the server that Exchange 2k3 currently lives on so was hoping to migrate over to 2k10 on a "spare server" and then do a clean build on the old "proper" server and move back over to it. The server will be upgraded to 2k8 R2 with 16GB RAM at the same time.

    Thanks in advance

That link is for Server 2008 role migration, absolutely NOTHING to do with Exchange in any form.

      ITKey:
Essentially you want to add an Exchange 2010 server to your 2003 organisation, retire Exchange 2003, add an additional Exchange 2010 server (your old, upgraded 2003 box) and then retire the first 2010 server.
All of this is documented -- there is a Wizard with Exchange2010SP1 which takes you through most of it.

Re: Migrating from 2003 to 2010

on the spare server install win 2008 r2 and join it to your domain and install exchange 2010 to be the 2nd exchange in your organization--and move the following things to the new server :
            1- mailboxes
            2- OAB
            3- Public folder
and then you can remove the old exchange
and prepare it and do the same steps

The Exchange deployment wizard will ask you various questions and then create you a custom guide to follow.
