  • different SMTP Connector for only 2 users

I have been trying to figure out if this is possible but have found nothing, so I thought I might try here.

I have an Exchange server 2007 that I "look after". I was asked if there was a way to have two users added that will use the POP3 connector to retrieve email from a franchise owned mail server and deliver email through the same franchise owned mail server for only 2 new users. The POP3 connector issue is not a problem. I just need to figure out how to route email from the two users through the franchises mail server.

That will not work to route outgoing email from a non domain user to an external SMTP server that requires authentication. I did however find an app that will allow me to do this very thing. at a cost of $1200 for 3 users. I would be better off creating a VM with sbs on it. There has to be an easier way......

Where was that requirement mentioned in your original post? I see nothing about non-domain users listed.

You cannot limit connectors to specific users. You would have to use transport rules to limit what users can send outbound and then have multiple connectors.

You are correct I left out the non domain user description in the OP but I don't think that has any thing to do with the question. I could make the new users part of the domain and apply an e-mail address policy for them and have then access the Exchange server through OWA or active-sync. So I didn't think it was necessary to mention it in the OP. The issue is the same. There is no way to easily create a policy that will direct an outgoing email to an external SMTP server that requires authentication, based on the user or group that is sending it.

I should have noted that I am not an Exchange admin.

If the users aren't domain members, then how is Exchange involved?
You can't have an Exchange mailbox without an AD account.

Unfortunately I think you may well be unable to do what you want to do.
The remote server you are using is expecting the clients to be POP3 end users, which Exchange is not. It is not designed to be used with a POP3 connector, and it certainly isn't designed to route email in different ways depending on the sender.

Thanks for trying to help the new guy, but I think you got a little tied up in the domain\non domain issue to focus on the actual question. Trees for the forest thing and all.

On the POP3 issue, if I could convince the franchise to convert there entire infrastructure it would make for an easy job on my end. But not every one is perfect.

On a side note, I did figure out how it can be done and it only took the correct search terms placed in Google. I am calling a school today to see if I can grab an intern to do the programing. I think it will make for a nice project for someone.
