  • Exchange 2010 Upgrade with 2007 & 2003

I'm getting ready to bring in Exchange 2010. Unfortunately, in my 2003 Exchange organization, someone installed a 2007 Exchange server for OCS about 3 years ago. This was never licensed and never upgraded. I am not able to install Exchange 2010 because I receive the error that Exchange 2007 is not SP2 or newer.

We have no mailboxes and are not using this server for anything actually. it's just "there." Should I just remove it from the domain by uninstalling 2007? Or upgrade to SP2 and try again and then remove when I have migrated all my mailboxes over from 2003 to 2010?

IMHO do a good uninstall and then try 2010 again.

While a removal of the server should be enough, personally I would upgrade it to Exchange 2007 SP3. That will ensure compatibility. Then remove Exchange 2007 using add/remove programs.

Unfortunately, the server is hosed and will not allow me to remove it or upgrade it. I can not move forward on the installation of a 2010 server. Should I manually rip this out of AD?

There are no manual removal instructions.
The only supported method is add/remove programs. Therefore if the server is dead, reset, NOT DELETE the computer account, build a new machine with the same name and add it to the domain. Install Exchange 2007 SP3 using the recoverserver switch. Then remove it. That will remove the server correctly from the domain so that you can carry on.

Thanks. That was the option on my mind and I will execute that. I have done that before in the 2003 world (recover).

            Thanks again!

Just to correct something - you need to install the same version of Exchange 2007 that was in before, and then either upgrade it to SP3 and remove it (which is what I would do) or remove it. You can't jump versions on recover because the upgrade also does additional prep work.

                Re: Exchange 2010 Upgrade with 2007 & 2003

I was able to get the server to respond correctly and have removed all roles except the mailbox role. This was a freebie version they installed on a 32-bit server 3-1/2 years ago for OCS testing. So, all is off except the Mailbox role because of the PF store. I have moved the replicas over to Exchange 2003 (not a big PF store at all), and removed the replica. But I am still unable to remove the PF store. I've always disliked PFs. So, once I get this done I should be able to uninstall 2007 completely.

Thanks, guys, for your comments. I was unable to remove the PF, but did so in ADSI and then was able to uninstall 2007. I am now also able to install 2010. PFs are just one folder here and only calendar data, so wasn't worried about it.
