  • Exchange 2007 OWA non-functional

I inherited a W2k8 STD SP2 domain -member server with Exchange Server 2007 Version: 08.01.0436.000 installed on it. Hub Transport, Client Access, and Mailbox roles are running on this single server only used for internal communication and scheduling. Browsing https://exchangeserver.domainname/owa (from a workstation on the domain) generates error 500 - Internal server error. There is a problem with the resource you are looking for and it cannot be displayed.
Attempting to browse owa application (from inside IIS manager on the Exchange server) generates HTTP Error 500.22 An ASP.NET setting has been detected that does not apply in Integrated managed pipeline mode.
I'm inexperienced with .NET and will appreciate any help offered. My Internet search has turned up nothing that seems to apply to my situation - or if it has I just don't make the correlation...

    Reinstall of CAS should help.

I wouldn't bother with reinstalling CAS role, I would go straight to Exchange 2007 SP3. That will effectively reinstall the product, while retaining the data.
Once that is complete, run the Exchange Best Practises tool from the Toolbox in the management console. If there are further errors that will flag them with links to the relevant Technet articles.
Finally run Microsoft Update (so go in to Windows Update and choose to enable Microsoft Update and ensure the system is fully patched.

Thank you Simon. I will act on your advice and perform the SP3 upgrade over the weekend (Winter weather permitting!) Will update status afterward.

          Hi Simon,

I upgraded our CAS to Exchange 2007 SP3 over the weekend along with update rollup 2. We now seem to be getting intermittent internal server error 500 when either hitting the page directly, after the OWA logon or any of the options pages. It's completely random.

The servers are fully patched microsoft update with all .net fixes applied.
We publish OWA through ISA 2006. This was working previously on Exchange 2007 SP1 with Update rollup 10 applied.

          Any suggestions/ideas welcome.

          Thanks for your help.

          Regards,

          Mark

            Re: Exchange 2007 OWA non-functional

Intermittent would tend to point to something outside of Exchange. If there was a problem with Exchange then I would expect it every time. It could be ISA, you would need to test it inside. However my experience with ISA is a love hate relationship so I tend to avoid it where possible.

              Re: Exchange 2007 OWA non-functional

Hello Simon. Finally got the opportunity to install SP3 last night and all upgrades completed successfully. I ran the Best practices tool and all it reported was self-signed certs and a two year old NIC driver. owa behavior did not change at all and the error 500 is still present. Any additional guidance will be appreciated.

                Have you tested it inside?
As my main instinct is a firewall or similar interfering with the traffic. ISA being the main target. However as I have already said, I don't use ISA so can't help with queries in that arena. You need to test it inside to find where the problem could be.

                  Re: Exchange 2007 OWA non-functional

Sounds like there may be confusion between my original problem and the subsequent one posted here. My original and post SP3 upgrade issue is that attempting to browse owa application (from inside IIS manager on the Exchange server) generates HTTP Error 500.22 An ASP.NET setting has been detected that does not apply in Integrated managed pipeline mode. owa does not work while testing on the Exchange server itself.

                    Re: Exchange 2007 OWA non-functional

I cannot tell you if the behaviour you are seeing is correct or not, because I don't think I have ever elected browse in IIS to view a web site. I don't have a Windows 2003 system to check if it should work or not.

Therefore I personally would ignore that issue.

However you should be able to use OWA by firing up the full browser and entering the servername/owa and being able to login. If you can't, but it works everywhere else correctly, then it is most likely a server issue, perhaps blocking local traffic rather than an Exchange issue.

if OWA is not working.. it's sound like your virtual directly got corrupted. you might want to recreate your virtual directly.

I appreciate your guidance but feel you've gotten off track with the details Simon. I started the thread stating I have a Windows 2008 server with owa that is completely non-functional. Error 500.2 generated from any attempt to access it. Upgrade from Exchange 2007 SP1 to SP3 made no difference whatsoever in behavior.

Why did you mention the browsing OWA through IIS manager then?
That was completely irrelevant and simply caused the confusion.

Ignoring what happens inside IIS, does OWA work in any shape or form either using Internet Explorer on the server or from a client on the local LAN. It should work in both places.

Don't even go near doing anything with IIS.

                          Simon.

I apologize for the confusion. Was just trying to emphasize that owa was broken from all aspects. owa yields the same error from a web browser on the server or from any client on the LAN.

Completed the steps in the technet article suggested by Humannetwork and recreated the owa virtual directory...no difference still. owa does not work anywhere. Any other ideas will be appreciated.
