  • Exchange 2007 on VMware environment consideratration

    Hello,

I currently have exchange 2000 server on Windows 2000 std server, and My AD Domain is 2003,

We have recently implemented 2 ESXi 4.1 server with Vsphere and Equallogic SAN, so now I have at my disposal two ESXi servers both HP ML350 with 32 GB RAM in each and two xeon quad-core E5430 2.66Ghz in each.

I have 100 mailbox right now on my Exch2000 box, they are average used mailboxed not very heavy used.

We are now looking to transition our Exch2000 box to Exch07, I am looking to put all the exch07 server roles on a one server only,

I am looking for best hard-ware configuration for my situation,

I have thought of creating a Exch07 VM with 10GB RAM and giving it 4 core from the total available 8 Cores, is this config should work OK for me?

How much storage I should allocate for the Exch07 box? is there any speacial consideration I should keep in mind for storage, cpu, or Mem? speacially on Virtualized environment?

As for the Exch07 Database, the default is 50GB but you can increase it with Registry change, my question is, if I want to setup 200GB database size do I have to set that up during exch07 install? or it will grow automatically?

Re: Exchange 2007 on VMware environment consideration

The database grows as required. If you set the limit to 100gb, then it will grow up to that.
Exchange 2007 was 50gb at RTM, the soft limit was increased with a later service pack.

As for configuration, that is hard to say. I would suggest that you look at the calculators available from the MS Exchange team blog, along with the resource calculations.

If you want someone to design the full hardware requirements, then hire a consultant.

    Simon.

      Many thanks Simon,

SO I have figured that I would be allocating 500GB Storage for my 100 average use email user, and I will give 8GB RAM and 2 CPU's from my virtual environment.

Simon, I have thought of creating three partition on my 500GB storage, 80GB for my OS, and second for my exchange database and third for transaction logs, can you please suggest how much space should I give to my database partition and transaction logs partition? will it ask allow me to set this up during the installation?

Another important question is about SMTP name sharing, currently I been sharing my domain name with our company's branch office in Montreal, my current exchange is 2000, how do I share SMTP name space in Exch07? I will be installing all the exch roles on one server only, and once I have all my mailbox moved to new exchange server I will decommission old Exch2000 box.

      Thanks again,

        One more thing,

I am planning to install Exch07 on Windows 2008 R2 Ent version,

MS has allowed this to happen with SP3 for Exch07, So in effect I will need Exch07 installation media with SP3.

Here is where I need help, the media I downloaded from MS site is Exch07 with SP1 only, there was no option on the ms site to download Exch07 with SP3, in this case how would I install Exch07 with SP3 on Win08 R2?

Just download SP3 from the public site. The service packs are the full installation.

            Thanks Simon,

After posting here I did find that SP3 is full install,

Simon, can you please give your input on this?

            Code:

I will add some more info to above explanation, Basically my company has published mx record for xyz.com and my AD and separate AD organization in montreal office uses that xyz.com name space. and I have smtp connector from my organization to the one in montreal, so in new Exch07 where would I setup this name space sharing?

There are many articles on sharing the SMTP address space.

Re: Exchange 2007 on VMware environment consideratration

Thanks Sembee for the link, I did search the internet for SMTP name sharing,

Actually I should had been more specific,

Where I am confuse is, once I install exch07 and I have both exch2000 and exch07 in co-existence, when should I setup SMTP connector on exch07 since my exch2000 also has that smtp connector setup? or is it ok to have smtp connector setup on both exchange at same time?

I need to leave have exchange on my network for about month or so as I am also preparing my backup for new exchange, once my backup is ready I will de-commision old Exch2000 box.

                Thanks,

                Yantra

Re: Exchange 2007 on VMware environment consideratration

You have 3 options while running both versions, use the send connector from E2000, use the send connector in E2007 or use both. Which option you use is completly up to you. In my installations/migrations I prefer to do it step-by-step, so most of the times I migrate routing first if I have the chance to do so.

                    Thanks Fischfra,

One more thing have come up during the upgrade, when I ran ExchBPA, it is recommending to turn off "link state update" should I disable the link state update from the registry? I have right now have two routing group connectors, one is for my regular email delivery and second is for shared smtp space connector to our other office email server in montreal,

Sembee if you are reading this please suggest what should I do,

As always many thanks for all your help.

                    Yantra.

Re: Exchange 2007 on VMware environment consideratration

The key you are refering to is needed if you have more then one routing group in in Exchange 2000/2003 and if you want to create more then one RGC to connect Exchange 2010 to different routing groups.
Normaly the key should be set before installing a second RGC from E2010 to E2000/2003 or best before installing Exchange 2010 in larger installations.

If this all is true and you want to set the key it's done through registry editing.

                        Thanks Frichfra,

So that means I should suppress the link state update on my exch2000 box? as I have two routing group connectors,

If you look at the attached screen shot I have three connectors,

first, is called Montreal, is for my shared smtp space connector to my Montreal office,
second, is called S3, is regular connector for my emails server,
and third is for my fax server which is not relevant here,

                        Can you please verify?

As far as I can see you just have one routing group in Exchange 2000, so the key isn't needed, but to make this clear: How much Exchange 2000 servers and routing groups are running in your environment?

I have one routing group, and in that I have three connectors, and only one exch2000 server,

                            Please suggest?

                            Thanks

Since this key is supressing the update in routing information between Exchange 2000/2003 servers and you have only one server this key is not needed in your installation.
