  • SBS 2008 Exchange services bat scripts

    Hello

Can anyone provide me with reliable Exchange 2007 on SBS 2008 batch files for stopping and starting the exchange services please.

I have a couple of scripts from a number or sources and whilst they all happily shut down the services to allow for a backup by Backup exec 12.5, none of the scripts successfully restarts them again.

I have to restart all the services manually.

I do not mind using .cmd files so if you have any good scripts to ensure all the services get started after the backups have finished... I'd be very grateful.

    Shutting down Exchange for backup?
You don't backup Exchange in that way, and it will not be a valid backup of Exchange.
You should be using an Exchange aware backup, such as the built in Backup tool of SBS. This will ensure that the backup is completed correctly, and flushes the transaction logs.

Exchange is not designed to be constantly stopped and you can actually damage the Exchange database by doing so.
Furthermore if you are stopping the services during the night the Exchange database maintenance tasks cannot run, further putting the data at risk.

You will have no valid backup of Exchange to fall back on either.

      Thanks Simon

I'm a bit confused about this issue. I thought that you had to stop the services in order to get a full backup.

What is Backup Exec doing to backup exchange ?

In Backup Exec there are backup options for exchange.. ie.. flush logs, don't flush logs and so on. Will all this happen without stopping the services ?

Where did you get that idea from?
With Backup Exec, you have to purchase the Exchange agent to do a valid backup of the Exchange product. It isn't just some files that are left open, it is a database and has to be backed up the correct way.
Unless you have the SBS version of Backup Exec, then you will not have the Exchange agent. Be prepared for a price shock - last time I bought it, the agent was more than the product. I stopped using Backup Exec many years ago and now use Backup Assist instead.
