  • Exchange 2007 Distribution Group

Does anyone know if it is possible to have a distribution group that is able to be only emailed to by certain external users? I know i can do this with internal users by modifying the Distribution Group to only accept email from certain Authenticated internal users. However i have been requested to give some external users the ability to email our all network users Distribution Group and for obvious reasons i don't want everyone on the WWW to be able to do this,
    cheers,
    hazey

Try creating contact with external email address then add those contact to DL restriction. Try ... don't have xs to lab to test....sorry abt that.

thanks for you advice, however i already tried to do this with no success. I can add an external contact as a member of a DG, but i cant add a mail contact to the list of senders allowed to send to the DG

Have you looked at Transport rules? They may be what you are looking for.

          Hi,

Can you try out this? Create a group, make external contact member of them then allow specifically that group in the DL.
          Thanks & Regards

thanks for the input, yes i can do this however this will only work with authentication required switched off which i am trying to avoid. I am sort of stuck as i wanted to make sure that the external email address authenticates somehow to avoid the address being spoofed. The whole reason for doing this is a stupid business process which i am trying to get changed

              Re: Exchange 2007 Distribution Group

There is no way that an external email address can be authenticated. Authentication only occurs for internal addresses. Therefore what you want to achieve is not possible with Exchange.

You need a proper list server, which can be configured to only accept emails from members. Exchange doesn't offer that functionality for external email addresses.

Thanks for the clarification, i will be "suggesting" that we stick with our current work flow in which is a number of select internally authenticated users have the ability to email the all network users DG and nobody else.

                  Hi,

Just go this idea... and i hope this will work.. although not tested
What you need to do is...
take check off from authenticated user to send email and then allow restriction that...accept emails only from member of the DL.
Then you add internal DL which consist of internal member and another dl which consist of external members.

Just make a test mailbox and test users and try it out.
                  Thanks & Regards
