  • Splitting a single domain to 2 different Exchange Sites

Hi all, I have a problem that I would love to discuss the solutions with some experts.

I have a single domain, we will call this companyA.com. Company A has split into 2 different companies, Company B and Company C.

Company B and Company C will have their own separate Domains (public and private), DCs and Exchange 2010 boxes running on Windows 2008.

Company A has Windows 2003 servers setup with a separate DC and Exchange 2003. Eventually, Company A servers will be decommissioned and there will be no Exchange setup for companyA.com. CompanyA.com's domain will only exist for a couple of months until clients are familiar with the company changes.

Half of Company A's employees will need forwarding to CompanyB.com, and the other half to CompanyC.com.

We have an OpenBSD box setup with Mail Deflector software to route the emails to the servers.

My question is, would I build out Company B and Company C servers as usual and then somehow setup the Mail Deflector to forward to its corresponding Exchange server based on the user? This problem would be easy if company A emails will all go to 1 of the new sites, but since it will be going to 2 different sites (depending on the employee), it gets a bit challenging.

Your input will be greatly valued!

Without knowing how Mail Deflector works, I coudln't be sure.

But in my world, yes, i'd build companyB and companyC as single, standalone domains, with their own MX records.

The companyA stuff, in the mean time, you could just have them accessing their old accounts via webmail?
Or, as a dodgy., dodgy suggestion, you could configure the outlook profiles for each user so not only do they have a relevant exchange account for ComapnyB or CompanyC, but also a POP3 or IMAP connection, in the same profile, to the pre-existing CompanyA environment

but his problem is, the emails to companyA ARE resolved - the accounts exist. he wants that email forwarded to companyB or CompanyC

This can be done quite easily.

Just create contacts for each user who has an email address in the first domain, pointing to the second domain. Exchange will accept the email and then deliver it to the second domain.
The use of the original domain will due out over time, although I think a few months is being rather optimistic. I usually recommend at least 12 - 18 months, allowing for annual things to occur.

I merged the two questions as I could see no justification for the duplication.
