  • upgrade from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007 with End-to-End Topology.

    Hi all.
I current use Exchange 2003, topology is Front end and Back (now it is running normal), and I want to upgrade Exchange 2007

Please find my topology on Attach file.

This is my plan to upgrade.
    1. Move mailbox from Backend to Frontend

    2. At Backend Server. DCPROMO and Uninstall Exchange 2003
    2.1 Reinstall OS Winserver2003 R2 SP2
2.2 Joint in Active Directory is member server mode
2.3 Install Exchange 2007 Sp1 (Hub,Mailbox,CAS Role) and update hot fix if need.

    3. Move mailbox from Ex2k3 Frontend to Ex2k7

    4. At Frontend Server. Uninstall exchange2003
4.1 Install Exchange 2007 with CAS role to publish Outlook web Access for client to access when they are outside.

please advise me, can i do as above plan or if not please guide me how can i do it?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

Theoratically you plan would work, But i think it won't be that easy.

How is your existing setup, once you move mailboxes from back to front end you will see that form based authentication that you might have setup for owa access will not work. Do you rpc over https setup.

In this case i would say, if due to lack of resources, change front end role to backend role and then proceed, how abt PF, offline address book, recipient update service, then your internet bound connects, any special connectors, this would require a deeper planning... to make simple. Just KISS [Keep it Simple ! sys admin :>] bring in another server and then do transistion.
    Thanks & Regards

The first thank for your cm.
The second, I would like to KISS same case of you. But I don't have Server remain so I can not do transition.
I have one question, If I have Exchange 2007 (Mail box, CAS, Hub role) ___ Backend server and Exchange 2003 (Publish OWA - don't have RPC over HTTPS) Front end. so can it work with above TOPOLOGIES.

      Thanks in advance.

Re: upgrade from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007 with End-to-End Topology.

First - be aware that Exchange 2007 in a DMZ is not supported. Therefore your frontend server in the DMZ will have to be removed.
If you want to maintain any kind of co-existence then the first thing that you will have to deploy is a CAS server which will replace the frontend server.
Also note that Exchange 2007 is on SP3, not SP1. I would go straight to SP3 for any new deployments. The SP3 download can be used for new installations.

If you don't have the hardware to introduce a third server then use a virtual machine to do so.

If you want to swing, which is where you move all the data to another machine, then you will have to allow time for that to occur. Public Folders for example can take days to replicate from another server.

Furthermore, if you are planning to use the machine that has been in the DMZ, I would be looking to remove Exchange 2003 from it, wipe it and rebuild it. I wouldn't trust a machine that has been in a DMZ, although putting Exchange 2003 in a DMZ was a bad idea to start with.

        Simon.

The thing is how you going to make it work, without transistioning you can upgrade your mailbox server, exchange 2003 owa, i know if you are accessing exchange 2003 mailboxes using cas role then look and feel will be of 2003 not sure how it would be other way around but you can access 2003/2007 mailboxes using cas and as sembee said cas needs to be the first one that gets upgraded. You may use virtual server or vmware server to setup a swing server.
          Thanks & Regards
