Mail enabled security group doesn't resolve external mail addresses

  • Mail enabled security group doesn't resolve external mail addresses

    For years we've had this mail enabled security group which contains users with external email addresses.

    The accounts have mail contacts setup as well.

    This setup stopped working recently and for the life of me I can't figure out why.

    Tracking log shows the following events for the message(s) : expand, transfer, deliver. Problem seems to be in the expand. it can expand the local addresses in the list but none of the externals show up.

    there's no issue emailing these users individually just in this (maybe other) distribution groups.

    I'm hoping there's a permission that's gone awry but after several days of looking I just can't see the issue. Any guidance is appreciated.
