  • Outlook offline address book issues

I've recently moved the address book from an old Exchange 2003 server to the new 2010 server, but I'm getting this problem when I try and manually force a refresh of the address list in the EMC on the 2010 server:

    --------------------------------------------------------
    --------------------------------------------------------
    Microsoft Exchange Error
    --------------------------------------------------------
Action 'Update' could not be performed on object 'Default Offline Address List'.
    Default Offline Address List
    Failed
    Error:
Failed to generate the content of the offline address book '\Default Offline Address List'. Two possible reasons for the failure are that the System Attendant Service is not running or you do not have permission to perform this operation. Error message : 'Error 0x6d9 (There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper) from RpcEpResolveBinding'.
Error 0x6d9 (There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper) from RpcEpResolveBinding

    --------------------------------------------------------
    OK
    --------------------------------------------------------
If I try and use the ESM on the 2003 box to force a rebuild of the offline address list, I get a box appear with a red X, saying:

[red X icon] There are no bindings.

    Facility: Win32
    ID no: c00706b6
    Exchange System Manager

    [Retry] [Cancel]
Anyone have any idea as to what the problem could be?
I am logged on as an administrator in the domain on the 2010 box.

Have you replicated the system folders from the Exchange 2003 server to the Exchange 2010 Server?

Yes, I have done so. Is there a way to double check it all went smoothly?

As you haven't said exactly what you have done or what guides you have followed it is hard to say. I have my own procedures, mainly based around checking item count between the two versions to ensure the content has replicated across.

Sorry, I followed the guide at 'simple talk exchange 2010 upgrade' (first link on Google, it won't allow me to post a link!) but with the exception that HT, CAS and Mailbox are on the same Exchange install.

I am not familiar with that guide.
You need to ensure that the system folders, particularly the OAB folders are replicated to the second server and the generation server has been changed.

            If you run

            get-publicfolderstatistics

You should see the OAB folders with an item count above 0. If there are no OAB folders or the item count is zero, then they haven't replicated correctly.

Re: Outlook offline address book issues

Thanks, I ran the command in the shell and got this:

              Code:
              [PS] C:\Windows\system32>get-publicfolderstatistics
              Name ItemCount LastAccessTime
              ---- --------- --------------
              EX:/o=First Organisation/ou=Exchange ... 0 06/09/2010 02:00:01
              EX:/o=First Organisation/ou=Exchange ... 0 06/09/2010 02:00:01
              EX:/o=First Organisation/ou=First Adm... 2 03/09/2010 12:02:59
              OAB Version 2 39 03/09/2010 15:16:04
              OAB Version 3a 39 03/09/2010 15:16:04
              OAB Version 4 13 03/09/2010 15:16:04
              /o=First Organisation/cn=addrlists/cn... 0 03/09/2010 15:16:04

              [PS] C:\Windows\system32>get-publicfolderstatistics
Another thing is that because the address list is not regenerating, the offline address book is 'stale', i.e. the address book is stuck at the state it was some weeks ago. OWA is fine and all changes (like hiding, deleting, adding an address to the GAL are reflected accordingly.)

(I think with hindsight I wish i'd left the oab generation on the 2003 box ).

Re: Outlook offline address book issues

Instead of trying to fix that replication and generating error(-s), just create a new one at the Exchange 2010 box and set the mailbox databases to use this one.
