  • Winmail.dat

Last week we installed a exchange 2013 server at a customer site.
Now sometimes that get mails back from customers saying they can`t open the attechments.
We send a .pdf as an attachment but at the reiciving end it has become a winmail.dat.
Not all users have that problem and not every .pdf that has been send.

This happens when an e-mail is sent by a Microsoft mail client (like Outlook) using Rich Text Format, and the recipient is unable to parse the non-standard format used by Microsoft to send such messages. The solution is to switch to HTML or Plain Text.

BTW, typing "winmail.dat attachment" into Google instantly returns hundreds of hits, all giving you this exact information as well as detailed instructions on how to change the e-mail format in Outlook.
