Hi I have an exchange environment set up for lab use (for applications that send email notifications) that needs to send emails to the internet. It used to be Exchange 2010 SP2 with 1 main server (all roles) and one Edge Transport. All was happy until one day the edge transport crapped out on me and couldn't be replaced, so I decided to go ahead with just the one server. I removed the edge transport from EMC and but emails were queuing up and not sending. Frustrated, I decided to use the outage as an opportunity to migrate to 2013. I upgraded the Exchange 2010 to SP3, and on a new 2012 R2 server, I installed Exchange 2013 SP1 with Mailbox, Client Access and Management tools. It installed fine. Currently I have a coexistence environment.

I configured an internet send connector with the 2013 server as the source server and wildcard address space, however, when i try to send emails to external addresses (using telnet to the new 2013 server) they don't send. The emails just queue up in the DNSConnectorDelivery queue. When I send to my corporate email The 'last error' is:

{LED=441 4.4.1 Error encountered while communicating with primary target IP address: ""Failed to connect. Winsock error code: 10060, Win32 error code: 10060."" Attempted failover to alternate host, but that did not succeed. Either there are no alternate hosts, or delivery failed to all alternate hosts. The last endpoint attempted was 207.46.163.138:25};{FQDN=domain.com};{IP=207.46.16 3.138}]"

I can ping "domain.com" and it resolves just fine. The recipient is a hosted exchange (Outlook 365) mailbox

When i send to a gmail recipient, it also queues with last error:

{LED=441 4.4.1 Error encountered while communicating with primary target IP address: ""Failed to connect. Winsock error code: 10051, Win32 error code: 10051."" Attempted failover to alternate host, but that did not succeed. Either there are no alternate hosts, or delivery failed to all alternate hosts. The last endpoint attempted was 2a00:1450:4013:c01::1b:25};{FQDN=gmail.com};{IP=2a 00:1450:4013:c01::1b}]

    Anyone have any advice?

Sounds like you don't have port 25 open to the internet, so no connection can be made to the internet hosts.
Check whether you can telnet to port 25 of a remote email server.

Ping means squat as a troubleshooting tool.

I generally use telnet for troubleshooting issues like this, trying to send via telnet usually gives more info than Exchange

Well, I guess i'm not getting alerts for replies to my post anymore! Really wish I would have checked here earlier.

Sembee you were correct. The ISP had decided to close our port 25, suspiciously at the same time that the old Edge Transport died. It was all just a coincidence. Once they opened it up, email flow was restored.

As for my comment about the ping, I was simply pointing out that the machine could resolve the name, since it seemed to me that it was complaining about the DNS.

        thanks

Conack, do you still have issues with alerts from threads you are subscribed to? Have you checked the User Settings and make sure that they haven't changed. I think there was a minor Update recently that id seem to make a couple of noticeable changes for me, so who knows. Thanks.
