  • Unable to view the Body of HTML emails exchange 2010

    Hello,

i have a client i have migrated to exchange 2010 latest SP about 35 mail boxes. Server 2008 64bit.
3 users when receiving emails are unable to view the body of emails that come in as HTML. TXT is fine. Attachments are avaiable.
    2 users have Outlook 2003 sp3 and 1 has Outlook 2007 sp2
i have changed the security settings in Outlook to allow download of pictures.
I have disabled then recreted the mailbox, this worked for 3 days
i have deleted the user and recreated the user and mailbox this works for 1 hour then the the problem came back
Im unable to view the body of the emaiil in OWA as well?
I am able to foward the email to another user who can view the email body, who then forwards it to the original recipient and they can view it??

    many thanks

    Hi,

Have you checked your Outlook Add-ins? I have known some AV add-ins to cause this problem in the past.

Re: Unable to view the Body of HTML emails exchange 2010

If you cannot view the messages through OWA, then the message is being damaged before it gets to the store. It isn't a client side issue.

The classic cause is AV or Antispam applications. If you have those installed, try removing them (disabling them is not enough) and rebooting the server.
If you have file level AV installed, then ensure that you have the correct exclusions set in the product as per the guidelines on Technet.

          Hi Seembee,

when the message is forwarded to another user the user can read the email, he can then forward it to the intended user who can also then read it??
i have disabled antispam and AV and tested no luck

As Sembee said, disabling them isn't sufficient. You need to remove them and reboot the server before you can establish whether the problem is fixed or not.

If the message can be read when forwarded, then it is probably being "fixed" somewhere along the line. If you are forwarding to an internal user then it would point to a gateway issue, firewall scanning SMTP traffic, something like that. Internal user to user traffic doesn't use SMTP.

I uninstalled the AV and rebooted still no change.
They are a single exchange server setup. I wll get the firewall people to check if they are scanning the emails coming in.

i also ran this from EE
Get-MailBox -OrganizationalUnit (example "contoso.com/users" | Set-user -MessageBodyFormat (text or mime) -MessageFormat (text or mime)

no luck with it. is their a way to check the message format in EMC

I have re run the script

                  Get-MailBox -OrganizationalUnit busiess.local/sales | Set-user -MessageBodyFormat Html -MessageFormat mime

this works but only for a while with emails coming thru with text an dpictures in the body of the email then the body of the emails dissappear again.

Re: Unable to view the Body of HTML emails exchange 2010

It has to be third party interference, and I continue to be sure that is the cause.
Try it with a workstation that has been stripped or built fresh with no third party tools installed at all - so just Outlook and Windows.

You should not have to change anything on the server for this to work correctly. If you did, then it would affect all email, both internal and external.

                      Hi Sembee,

on the server i have ex 2010, backup assist for backing up and no other third party software. the firewall is only pointing the emails to the exch server no filtering or scanning.

Have just tested it with new laptop just out of the box Win7 with only Office 2007 installed on it no AV.
Connect to the server via IMAP(all other connections are exchange) then sent an email to the mailbox the body showed the picture in the body of the email then it disappeared.
