  • How do you change how an email appears to come from ????

I wonder if anyone has the little bit of knowledge I need, I am trying to change how the mail from appears to the recipient currently at the mo it shows as username then in brackets the email address what we would like is it to show just the email address if possible.

I have been looking at the transport rules section on my server and it appears on the face of it to be able to remove or change the mail header, but for the life of me I cannot get it to work, I have googled around and have found a few other people wanting to do similar things to me but noone seems to have an answer for how to get it to work. Anyone got any ideas on this particular part or successfuly implemented it ???

    Thanks v much in advance.

The only way would be to change the display name.
Although a bare email without a display name is always suspicious to me as it seems automated and therefore is likely to be spam.

Thanks Simon for your help do you mean the 'simple display name' under the user properties in exchange management console or something else ?

Not sure how the management are going to like that

Simple Display name might work, however if someone has asked for the behaviour to change, they will have to accept the consequences of that change.

A bare email address without display name is very unusual these days, and if I received an email like that I would be immediately suspicious of its origins.

Ok do you think a better way might be to setup some kind of group with a generic type header and give the users send as permission ??

          Appreciate the help btw.

It is impossible to know because you haven't actually outlined what the end goal is.
If you simply want a generic address, then that could work, although the display name for the group will still appear in the GAL if you aren't careful.

Re: How do you change how an email appears to come from ????

Sorry Simon what they wanted to do was recieve email via a generic address [email protected] now at the moment that is forwarded to a single user and she replies, of course this will show to the repient as her name and email address in brackets so the customer then starts to talk to her directly which is what they did not want.

So just to summarise the email when sent appears as username ([email protected]) they want to remove the personal infomation and preferably just have the company name shown.

Hope this clears up the confusion.

Just create another account for that email address and set the display name to whatever you like. Give the user permissions to the account (Full Mailbox and Send As) and add the account to Outlook.
Outlook is intelligent enough that when you hit reply from a second account, the from field should already be populated.

If you are using Outlook 2010, then add the Account as an additional account (rather than an additional mailbox) and then you will also get notifications of email in the second account.
