  • Exchange 2003 to 2010 or 2003 AD to 2008 first

Hi there, I tried to sum the post up in the title. I have a Windows 2003 domain controller and another server running Exchange 2003. I plan to upgrade the domain controller to 2008 R2 and the Exchange server to Exchange 2010 (on a 2008 R2 server).

My question is which one should I upgrade first. From my understanding, Exchange 2010 can run in a 2003 SP2 AD environment but I'm wondering if upgrading one before the other is best.

    Thanks,
    Jess

If I would be task with this, I would upgrade Exchange first. When Windows 2008 R2 was released running Exchange 2003 against this DCs wasn't supported and there was some problems readable around the web. Right now it's supported, but why add additional sources of trouble.

Exchange 2010 works very well against Windows 2003 DCs (with the appropriate service pack of course), so I would go this way first.

Make sure that no matter which migration you are doing first it's done complete once you start the next.

Thanks for the suggestion. I think we will go ahead and do the Exchange upgrade first.
