  • Changing a user's AD PRIMARY GROUP, user disappears from distribution group in exchan

    Has anyone experienced the following?
I change a user's primary group from Domain Users to groupA.
    GroupA is a security group.
GroupA is a mail enabled security group.

After changing the primary group the user no longer appears in the group when I open that group in Outlook/Exchange global address book.

Why should altering a primary group setting affect the visibility of users in a group membership list?

My client has been asking me this for a couple of weeks now and I have been unable to find an answer, please help.

Why are you changing the primary group?
As far as I am aware it is not something that is recommended. Certainly in all the years I have worked with AD it is not something I have ever done, or felt the need to do.

I am having the same issue.
      Server 2008 + Exchange 2007 SP2

Have you found a solution/reason for this?

We are changing primary groups for an internet filtering application we have which applies policies to users based on what group they are a 'primary' member of.

      Help Please

What is the application? It sounds as if you need to have a word or two with the developers!

Have to say I agree here. I wouldn't accept a product that requires me to make changes to the AD in this way. I am all for using groups, but these would be groups created in AD, not changing the Primary User's group. Sounds like a very poor design in my eyes, and something the developers of the application have probably not thought through, particularly when it comes to its impact on Exchange.
