  • A client's whole mails got vanished

I just got a client complaint telling me he has lost everything in his mailbox when he tried accessing his mailbox though Owa and Outlook. I searched through EMC and found out his mailbox had about 20 items which was about 3800 KB. I checked on my side and everything was the same; since he claims he has not archived any mail, where can I locate his mails or bring them back from? Thank you.

Mail doesn't usually just get "lost" - someone deletes it. So your best solution is to restore is using your mailstore backup.

In my last role, we used Backup exec, and I was able to restore mailboxes on an email-by-email basis. I never did an entire mailbox restoration, although I'm pretty sure that could be done too. Same thing _may_ be possible with ntbackup.

Of course you have your backups from last night, right ?

Thanks for your reply. i also believe the same.. but the problem I have now is that, we hardly do backups... thats the sad part... we have a month old backup... so that means single mailbox recovery cant be achieved...?

no - you can probably retrieve the single mailbox, it'll just be a month old.

This is an excellent time to review your backup scenario I guess.

          Email doesn't disappear.
The most common cause is the user has configured Outlook to deliver email to a personal folder, which sucks the email out of the mailbox.
