  • Ports required to configure outlook behind VPN

    Hi Friends

We want to configure the outlook over the VPN network. We have requirement to open specific ports to configure outlook over the VPN. Please suggest which ports are needed.

We are using exchange 2k7 SP1 and configure the outlook 2k7 on client side.

    Thanks
    Atp

Re: Ports required to configure outlook behind VPN

Microsoft do not recommend restricting the traffic between Outlook and Exchange. It uses dynamic ports. Therefore to answer your specific question the ports required are everything above 1024.

If you want to lock it down, use Outlook Anywhere, which runs over port 443. No VPN required.

I would agree with Sembee. Outlook connects via MAPI which in turn uses RPC, you need port 135 and all ports over 1024 open for RPC which is why it's such a horrible security hole.

Unless you have requirements for Mobile users to also connect to other resources such as file servers I always recommend Outlook Anywhere.
