  • Routing email external through Exchange 2007 from Excahnge 2003

I have a Exchange 2007 CAS / HUB server and 2007 Mailbox / HUB server, as well as Exchange 2003. Email works between the 2007 and 2003 Servers. Incoming email works coming into the 2007 CAS server and gets over to the Exchange 2003. Unfortunately external email from Exchange 2003 sits in it's queue.

The routing connector is created between the 2007 MBX/HUB and 2003 servers and obviously works for email between the two servers but how can I have Exchange 2003 to route external email through the routing connector and out the 2007 servers?

I've read the TechNet on the routing connectors and it seems to me they are setup correctly but I'm missing something. I've seen this issue posted a lot but not a real clear answer fix the issue. Any assistance is appreciated.

    Thanks.

Do you have a Send Connector configured on the Exchange 2007 server?
If not then that is the cause of the problem as the server cannot send the email.
You may have to recreate the Send Connectors. Problems with the RGCs are quite common so recreating those shouldn't be ruled out either.

      Simon,

Thanks for the reply. I do have a send connector on the 2007 server. In fact if I send email from the mailbox on the 2007 server the mail gets out OK. The mail also works OK between the 2003 & 2007 servers. But for some reason outgoing email from the 2003 server stays in the 2003 queue.

I have two CAS / HUB servers (you might remember my last post about creating the second CAS server) if I check the header on email from a 2007 mailbox I can see it goes through both 2007 servers.

On the Exchange 2003 server (originally a single server setup) should I delete or disable the SMTP virtual server or can I configure it to send email across the connector to the 2007 server. Seems like there hast to be some thing on the Exchange 2003 server that needs to be done to direct all email to the 2007 HUB server.

If you remove the SMTP Virtual Server then email stops.
        Inter-Server traffic goes over SMTP.

It sounds to like Exchange 2003 isn't seeing the Send Connectors. Try recreating the Send Connectors.
