  • Outlook Anywhere with Exchange2007

    Hi,
I have Exchange 2003 server in my organization.
    Recently, i've installed new Win2k3 R2 x64 server with Exchange 2007.
The main goal is to get rid of the old Exchange 2003 server.
I moved all mailboxes and public folder from old server to the new one.
OWA is working fine internally and externally.

I have 2 problems before i can shutdown the old server:

    1. Some specific mailboxes cannot be accesses via OWA after entering the credentials. (see attached "owa_error.jpg")

    2. Outlook Anywhere is not working although "Outlook Anywhere" feature is enabled on the server.
External Outlook clients cannot connect to my server.

I've tried to check that issue with: testexchangeconnectivity.com
    The error I got is:

Attempting to ping RPC Endpoint 6001 (Exchange Information Store) on server mail.mydomain.com
    Failed to ping Endpoint
    Additional Details
An RPC Error was thrown by the RPC Runtime. Error 1130 1130

I've also attached the screenshot ("test_error.jpg").

I cannot find any reasonable solution on the web to that problem.

Is anyone familiar with that 2 issues?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    hi,

are your A and MX records correct for your new server?

Does the outlook anywhere feature work internally?

      Hi,

      Yes, the records are correct.

How can I check the outlook-anywhere feature internally?

Your images don't load here, so no idea what they say.
Testing Outlook Anywhere internally isn't really valid any longer, because Outlook Anywhere should be configured automatically by the autodiscover process.

          Hi Simon,
          I've attached the screenshots again.
Try to load them again (click on the black image you get to see the image on new browser window, then refresh the page several times to get the full image).

          Thanks

This is a forum, where other people provide support in their free time.
If you cannot wait, call Microsoft or an Exchange consultant to assist. Attempting to bump your posts does not help.

With regards to your screenshots, the first one still doesn't display correctly.
The second one is what should be expected so provides no assistance at all.

The Microsoft tool should point you to resources on what the problem is.
The primary reasons are not using a trusted SSL certificate, not enabling the RPC proxy or the feature correctly in Windows or not having the DNS configured correctly.

              Simon.

                Confirm this for me:

                HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Rpc\RpcProxy - there should be a string called:ValidPorts

What is the value of this Reg string?

                The value should be:

                E2K7Server_NetBIOS:6001-6002;E2K7Server_NetBIOS:6004;E2K7Server_FQDN:6001-6002;E2K7Server_FQDN:6004;

                E2K3Server_NetBIOS:6001-6002;E2K3Server_NetBIOS:6004;E2K3Server_FQDN:6001-6002;E2K3Server_FQDN:6004

                No server restart required.

Put the E2K3 entries only if you still have users in E2K3 server, any confusion on the above..let me know.

                  Re: Outlook Anywhere with Exchange2007

                  Hi Jedi001,

here are the entries for "ValidPorts":

                  ex2k7:6001-6002;ex2k7:6004;ex2k7.domain.local:6001-6002;ex2k7.domain.local:6004;

                  ex2k3:6001-6002;ex2k3:6004;ex2k3.domain.local:6001-6002;ex2k3.domain.local:6004

Do i have to change something with those entries? for the FQDN should it be domain.local or domain.com?

I've still got mailboxes on the 2k3 server but all rpc over http users are on the 2k7 server.
The ex2k7 server is behind firewall (FG-60B), right now i've created rules for HTTP and HTTPS ports. Do I have to open ports 6001,6002,6004 for traffic too?

Still can't understand why does the server rejects rpc over http connections?

                  Regards,
                  Regards,

no - don't open the RPC ports in your firewall. THat's a Bad Idea.

                      Re: Outlook Anywhere with Exchange2007

The bottom line is that this feature either works, or it doesn't.
If it doesn't, then disable it in Exchange, then remove the RPC Proxy from Windows Components. In IIS manager remove the two RPC virtual directories. Once complete, run IISRESET to write the change to the IIS metabase.

Then reinstall the RPC Proxy component and enable Outlook Anywhere again.
Wait 15 minutes and it should then function.

                      No registry changes required.

                      Simon.

                        Hi Simon,
                        Thanks for your help!

I did what you've asked but still the same, no rpc over http connection.

Do you need me to publish log files or something that might help to figure it out?

                          Re: Outlook Anywhere with Exchange2007

Logs will not show anything of any use.
As I wrote above, it either works, or it doesn't.

It could be the Ipv6 bug, which is supposed to be fixed with later updates, but in a few occassions I have had to make the change that the Technet article has outlined.

                            Re: Outlook Anywhere with Exchange2007

IPv6 bug is for Windows 2008 users, isn't it?
My Exchange 2007 installed on Windows Server 2003 as I mentioned before.

                            Maybe it's IIS problem?

Is there anything else I can try before giving up?

I have nothing else to suggest at this time other than a call to Microsoft or getting a consultant to look at the system. Diagnosis in a forum such as this can be quite difficult.
