  • Help swapping 2003 and 2007 roles to complete migration

I migrating (or transitioning) from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007. I have the 2007 server configured and operational using cas, mailbox and hub roles. Exchange 2003 is acting as the frontend server and still has the users mailboxes. I have migrated Public Folders and a single mailbox to test; email is working.

In order to complete the migration with the least interruption of service it seems the only way to move users and still give them web access as well as ActiveSync is to swap the roles of the server. That is to make the Exchange 2007 server the frontend server (I know is not the correct term) and move the 2003 server to the backend. From what I have read: "An Exchange 2003 front-end server cannot provide access to an Exchange 2007 Mailbox server" But I believe 2007 server can provide access to the Exchange 2003 server. So if I swap the roles I should be able to move users incrementally without them loosing access, then finally just remove the Exch 2003 server.

If this sounds correct could you give me an idea what I need to do on each server to complete the swap?

    Thanks in advance...

You are going to have to stand up a second Exchange 2007 server with just the CAS role to have a seamless migration, due to the way that the proxying works.
Run an eval edition of both Windows and Exchange on a machine - even a VM while you do it.

      Simon,

Thanks for your response. Could you elaborate a bit I'm unsure how that would work. Wouldn't I eventually have to configure CAS on the current Exchange 2007 server to get back to the single mail server?

There is not much more I can say.
The CAS proxy functionality is documented on Technet.
You shouldn't have to touch your existing server, but for seamless transfer you may have to move SSL certificates around.

          Simon,

Sorry to sound dense. I didn't realize at the time CAS role on the Exchange 2007 server cant proxy for Exchange 2003 if it also has the mailbox role.

As long as I can install the CAS into my Existing Exchange 2003 and 2007 setup that will be OK. Moving the SSL cert is no problem.

          Thanks..
