  • Removal of old client access roles and hub transport roles

    Hi all,

I have been tasked with deploying exchange 2007 in our environment, 2 2003 DC's 1 2003 enterprise CMS scc cluster, 1 CAS/transport server.

The original admin had setup 2 exchange 2007 servers unclustered running all required roles, in a standby node configuration, using local replication.

Since then management decided to insist on high availability clustering for the mailbox server and settled on a VM running on our HA xen cluster that would act as the client access and hub transport server.

    1st question:

    Is this a viable setup?

    2nd question:

After I got the CMS up I still see the old exchange server entries showing as mailbox, client access and hub transport roles, and I can't remove them. What is the recommended removal method? I get database location errors and AD erros indicating that the entries for these servers can not be located.

Thanks in advance for any/all replies

If the servers are still active, then you will need to remove them using add/remove programs.
If they are not, then you will need to build replacement servers and then install Exchange using the recoverserver switch. Once done you can then remove Exchange correctly using add/remove programs.

For full redundancy you need four Exchange servers.

    2x mailbox servers
2x CAS/HUB transport servers using NLB.

If I was being very picky then two Internet connections would also be required.

    Simon.

Thanks for the info, we want to avoid adding more HW, thus the VM running the CA anf HT rols on an HA xen cluster.

Unfortunately, the original servers are already gone, but the remenants remain, so when I am ready to install exchange on the VM I need to use the recoverserver switch and that will get rid of the invalid entries, correct?

      Thanks

A bit more info on the situation:

The old exchange servers show up in the new server's exchange management console, screen capture attached. The old servers are mlexchange1 and mlexchange3 btw.

Recover Server on its own doesn't remove them.
Reset the Computer Accounts in ADUC, DO NOT DELETE them. Then build windows with the same name etc. Add to the domain.
After completing the recover server installation, you can remove Exchange correctly using add/remove programs and do anything that the uninstaller tells you to let it work.

Basically you are putting it back to remove them again.

Re: Removal of old client access roles and hub transport roles

The computer accounts have been deleted from ADUC, (by the former admin), will readding them still work, or am I stuck?

Will I still be able to readd them and use add/remove programs to get rid of the AD remenants?

Re: Removal of old client access roles and hub transport roles

The recoverserver switch relies on the original computer account(s) being in the AD still. Each computer account has it's own GUID, meaning no two are alike. If you re-create the computer accounts, they will have different GUID's so recoverserver will not work.

              Edit:

How far back do your DC backups go ...also maybe can you restore the lost accounts with sysinternals AdRestore?

Our backups go back 2 weeks, long past where the computer accounts were deleted.

Does anyone know a way to edit the LDAP info to remove the entries, or if these old entries can remain with new server roles and ot cause any issues?

                Thanks for all the replies

I have read that the nonexsistant exchange servers can be removed using ADSI edit. Would this be an option for my situation?
