  • Autodiscovery Ex2007 & OL2007

    Hi,

it hurts a little that I have to bother other people with that, but as it seems I am stuck.

    My setup is quite simple:
1 Exchange 2007, one "main" AD-Domain "2angels.cc" (".net" is the internal Domain), no Firewall.

I added one Maildomain "theben.at" to this server with address-list segregation . Like hosting.

    Now here is the thing:
2angels works fine in every way.

    "theben" has problems:
    1. OWA works
    2. All tests on "www.testexchangeconnectivity.com" are working perfectly for every user in that domain (autodiscover redirect)!
    3. Outlook 2010 works perfect even with Autodiscover.
    BUT:
    Outlook 2007 makes Problems:
    1. Connectivity test (outlook icon taksbar) says everything is failing.
sometimes it gives a Certificate warning.
    2. Consequently the autodiscover in Profile setup doesnt work - Certificate Failure. but even the redirect does not work.
    3. And thats the weirdest: if I try to manually setup the Mailaccount the login message pops up, but no matter which user/pw I use it keeps popping up.

??? I am really stuck. Everything SHOULD work according to the tests, but in fact with OL2007 it doesnt. (ONLY 2007).

    Additional Info:
When I use "test-outlookwebservices" it gives an error:

    [PS] C:\>Test-outlookwebservices -clientaccessserver "ex.2angels.net" |fl

I didn't give it to much attention though, since all the Test on the Exhchange Website was working. And it cannot be the problem for the manual setup failure.

I am absolutely stuck. searched everything I could.
This post is my last hope.

    Looking forward,
    alex

You are getting authorisation failures. The most common reason for that is the URL doesn't resolve to the correct place.
The test web site from Microsoft uses external information, that doesn't always apply internally. Therefore you need to ensure that the names it is using resolve internally.

You may have to reset the virtual directories to get the authentication settings back to the default.

that would make sense, if I would work internally - which I don't. I access only from external sources.

I can access all the listed autodiscover directories directly in IE and, after I supply the "theben" credentials, I can see the file with an "invalid request" remark. that is ok as far as I understood. I can do this both intern and extern.

At least the exchange test website and the Outlook connectivity test (in the Taskbar) should give me the same results, as the are both external.

what is the difference? why can one resolve and the other doesn't?

AND: With Outlook 2010 it works perfect and with 2007not? from the same external machine?

thank you A LOT for your thoughts!

If you are only working externally, what was the point in posting the results of test-outlookwebservices? That only applies to clients who are inside the firewall on the same network as Exchange. The results are not valid for external clients.

What is the host OS? I have heard of an authentication setting causing problems for the older clients. It isn't something I have seen myself, but I have everything on the latest possible.

I posted them as additional information. Obviously I dont know if this info is crucial or not - otherwise I would have solved the problem.

If the outcome of this test is not relevant for my setup, the question of why it is not working despite all the positive test results AND the working Outlook 2010 is even more bigger!

The same autoconfiguration test (on the outlook Icon) is giving me different results on Outlook 2007 and 2010!! WHY?! On the same machine!

          A W7 PC.

From the simple logic point of view this must not be!

          Thank you for your thoughts!

If we are really picky, Outlook 2010 is a beta product, it shouldn't be used in a production environment. Doesn't stop people doing so though.

What you haven't said is what the differences are between the two clients in the results form the autodiscover test.

The certificate warning could be important. Do you have a commercial certificate on the Exchange 2007 server? If not, why not? If you do, was it configured correctly. Is the certificate that is being presented from the correct server?

              Simon

first: you are absolutely right about using beta. And I don't "use" it. a friend of mine did and since he could use autodiscover on his mailbox on the same domain, I got the Idea about testing it.
BUT: the exchange connectivity test website is not beta and everything works perfect there. So why shouldn't it work with Outlook (2010 AND 2007)?

The difference between the clients results is: 2007 tries all possibilities and writes FAILED (sometimes in between the certificate message pops up). 2010 reaches REDIRECT HTTP and writes SUCCEED.

As you suggested I will go into the Certificate topic. It makes most sense to search there.
In fact it is a commercial cert (again - exchange website is happy!). I will get all the details.
Are there any known differences in OL2007 how it treats certificates than 2010?

I really appreciate your thoughts! thank you very much!

                Re: Autodiscovery Ex2007 & OL2007

If you are getting a certificate prompt then something is wrong either with the configuration of autodiscover or with the SSL certificate that you are using.
As far as I am aware there are no changes in the way that SSL certificates are treated between the two versions of Exchange.

                  Re: Autodiscovery Ex2007 & OL2007

I suspect the error in somewhere in the "autodiscoverRedirect" setup, even though there actually no mistakes to make. But I am going to investigate in that direction. (The exchange test website states that this redirect is working properly).

the autodiscover in general works as the main domain and all the tests show.
Also the certificate is setup correctly - again proof is to be found in the fact that that it works for the first domain and the testwebsite for every domain.

I found the solution for the error in the "test-outlookwebservices":
I had to activate "DisableLoopbackCheck" (which is not good), but now even this test is giving me a success message for every user.

Everything is working BUT Outlook 2007. If that is not strange, I don't know what is.

There MUST be a difference in OL 2007 and OL 2010. Otherwise this behavior cannot be explained.

                  Thank you for your patience!
                  alex

PS: when I try http://autodiscover.theben.at/autodi...todiscover.xml in IE (or FF) I get the right results here too: I am redirected, getting a credential pop up and afterwards error 600.
this happens intern and extern. So the redirectsetup seems to work fine.

thank you very much for all the help!

I solved it by rather mysterious means.

I wanted to show a friend the behavior on his pc (he has OL2007) and stangely everything worked out.

I reinstalled OL on my PC (I changed to 64bit) and now it works.

                    It was a broken installation.

These are the times where I dont like my job....

                    Again, thank you very much!
