  • Which Windows on Ex2007?

We are doing an org to org migration from ex2003 to ex2007. Unfortunately, ex2010 is too bleeding edge for management. All our DCs will soon be Win2003 R2 and we are building new servers on Win 2008 R2. Unfortunatly, support for Win 2008 R2 and Exchange 2007 is not available yet.

My question is it worth putting Exchange 2007 on Windows 2008 or is it better to install Exchange on Windows 2003 R2.

    Thanks

2008 IMO. No point in installing a new server with a 7 year old OS. Your 2008 R2 servers should come with 2008 downgrade rights. Exchange 2010 is AFAIK an evolution of 2007 rather than a major upgrade though, so I'd be pushing for that even if it means delaying the Exchange upgrade a few months until it's been in the wild for a bit longer.

I guess I'm looking for a compelling reason to put Exchange 2007 on Windows 2008 as it will be the only server in our company that is not 2003 R2 or 2008 R2.

Has anyone out there run Exchange 2007 on Windows 2008?

        Yes. Me.

I don't really understand your question, are you suggesting that 2003 R2 is better than 2008 RTM? Server 2003 R2's projected end of support is in 6 months.

My question would be, is there a compelling reason to not use Exchange 2010 other than management prejudice? Build a new server 2008 R2 box, put Exchange 2010 on it and transfer a couple of test mailboxes. Run it for a while and see how it goes. Once you are happy all is well transfer the rest of the mailboxes and decomission the old server(s). There's no reason why there can't be a period of coexistance.

Thanks for the link, I should have gone there first but I just assumed that Win 2003 R2 had a couple of years left, but the July 2010 end of life is the compelling reason to go with Win 2008.

I believe 2008 R2 has more advanced AD features but my main concern was that I would be breaking our standards of having only Windows 2003 R2 and 2008 R2 servers.

Your Ex2010 transition plan is exactly the plan I presented, but management prejudice is a powerful thing. We would not be moving to ex2007 except for our Sharepoint and other initiatives.
