  • SBS2008 Exchange2007 - Outlook 2007 keeps asking for credentials in internal domain

Hi All, this one has me really beat, 3 days of trying to solve this problem has killed me!!!

This is a new installation of SBS2008 runing exchange 2007. For some reason the Outlook 2007 client machines ask for login credentials for remote.domain when logging in locally in the domain.

When entering the username and password and requesting to remember password it still comes back!!!

I have updated the server with all the latest updates, and i seem to think that there is some sort of compatibilty issue with Outlook 2007. There are some clients running 2003 but they do not experiance this issue.

Help some please, this is has got me beat!!

Check the SPNs on the server. The only time I have ever had this problem with Outlook 2007 wiht Outlook 2003 being ok, was due to the SPNs pointing to the wrong server.

Also, does OWA work ok for all users? Does it effect new and existing users?

Thanks for response, could you be more specific as to how to check SPNs.

      OWA works fine.

This should point you in the right direction.

I am not sure this is the problem as from the article it seem SPN's are mainly for server to server authentication rather than client authentication.

Have you looked at the even viewer of the client machines?

It does sound strange. I don't deal with SBS, so not an expert on that side. If you hold your Ctrl of shift key down and right click on the Outlook icon that appears near to the system's time, it should give you an option to test connectivity. That may shed some light.

It may be to do with Certificates. Have you used 3rd Party ones, your own or left it as the default.

All connections status state established and i kept the default certificates as am not an expert on certificates so dont get involved.

It must be an exchange 2007 issue.

I login to a machine with the same user credentials that has Office 2003 and setup outlook and it works fine.

When logging into a machine with Office 2007 i get this problem!!!!

                  What the.....

                      Resolution has been found.

The issue was detected by Microsoft after certain updates had been applied to SBS2008.

To resolve the issue please install Rollup 9 for Exchange Server 2007

It can be found on the link below:

Will applying Exchange 2007 SP2 provide the same fix? I tried and it is still having this popup.

Ozy - Exchange 2007 SP2 should resolve the problem. If you are still seeing the issue then you should post in a fresh thread - not hijack another one.

Re: SBS2008 Exchange2007 - Outlook 2007 keeps asking for credentials in internal doma

                            A post on Microsoft's Official SBS blog yesterday (16 Feb 2010) http://blogs.technet.com/sbs/archive...rver-2008.aspx

says that KB973917 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973917) makes changes to IIS authentication that can cause unpredictable behaviour such as multiple prompts for authentication from Outlook clients connected to a SBS 2008 server at roughly 5 minute intervals. Local and Outlook Anywhere clients may be affected, but not OWA clients.
The cause is that a mix of user and kernel mode authentication is enabled.

It goes on to say that "Update Rollup 9 (or for Exchange Server 2007 SP1 or later" will fix the issue - as noted above - because it forcefully disables kernel mode authentication at the global level, and suggests that another option is to run the following command from an elevated command prompt:

                            %windir%\System32\inetsrv\appcmd.exe set config -section:windowsAuthentication /useKernelMode:false

(the previous command should be typed in one line)

There is the usual caveat that there are many reasons why a user may be asked for credentials, and the above SBS blog article includes links to other posts covering some of the reasons.

ok so this is the final solution for this problem right ?

                              http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l...CHG.80%29.aspx

by opulating the SPN of the Exchange server in the AD database ?
