  • Install Exchange 2010 on SBS 2008?

Can you not install the SBS Exchange 2007 component and instead install the full version of Exchange 2010? Any idea how the licensing works between SBS Exchange Cals and Exchange 2010? Isn't a CAL included for Exchange with every instance of Outlook?

    Thanks,
    Chase

Other way round, each Exchange CAL entitles you to an instance of Outlook for that CAL meaning you don't have to buy full blown Office for Email only.

Regarding Exchange 2010, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a service pack or upgrade for SBS 2008, but given the tight integration between Exchange and the OS in SBS I wouldn't be trying a standalone install. I'm pretty sure even if it worked it would be unsupported by MS

Cruachan - that is 2003 licensing when Exchange included an Outlook CAL. That unfortunately stopped in 2007 and presumably continues into 2010.

As for SBS 2008/MSX2010: remember to think of SBS as a suite so you could install 2010 but you would have to buy it/license it separately and none of the SBS CALS would cover Exchange 2010. (it would be like running Excel 2010 with Office 2007 - some integration would break) Also you are probably in uncharted/unsupported territory.

Iím honoured to have been selected for the SMB 150 list for 2013. This is the third time in succession (no logo available for 2011) that I have been honoured with this award.

Unless you have a burning need for Exchange 2010 right now, I would wait until the SBS 2008 R2 is released, which will include it.

I was surprised to read this as I've done a couple of Exchange 2007 installs where the customer did have Outlook CALs. However I checked into it and they were existing SA customers, which is the only exception to the new licensing structure.
