  • Outlook access from AD Sites other than Exchange server site

    Hi,

I seem to have a problem accessing Exchange 2k7 via Outlook from my AD sites other than that which my single Exchange 2k7 server is in stalled in.

For example the following sites are configured as follows
    Site 1:
    Exc2k7 server infra
    DC1
    DC2
(DC1 & DC2 are listed as the DC used by MS Exchange ADAccess including GC)

    Site 2:
    DC 3
    DC 4

When a user attempts to use their Outlook mailbox from Site 2 they can't unless I allow the clients to access DC1 and DC2. I dont particular want clients on Sites 2 to access DCs from Site 1.

Can anyone suggest where I'm going wrong?

    Thanks in advance

The behaviour you are seeing is what I would expect.
Why don't you want the users to access those domain controllers?

Re: Outlook access from AD Sites other than Exchange server site

      Mainly speed and security.

Some of the Sites are across WAN links which carry alot of other traffic if we can avoid needless use of the links its better in the long run.
Also security, again the WAN links are connected via with firewalls and we try and keep the rulesets focussed to required services and don't needlessly open up servers between sites. DC to DC on different sites are fine. But clients coming back to DCs from other sites I'm not so sure.

Is there anyway I can allow Exchange to talk to the remote clients and the remotes DCs and then let the clients talk to their local DCs.

      thanks

You have to configure Outlook to use the DC/GC in their site, look up the following link:

Sites and Services in AD should stop client machines from using domain controllers they shouldn't do.
However if you have Exchange installed on a domain controller anywhere in the Exchange org then it can cause issues.
