  • authentication problem after mailbox move to Exchange server 2007

after installing a new exchange server 2007, we moved one of the users mailboxes from their old exchange server 2003.
this immediately resulted in all of the users being prompted for a username & password even though their mailboxes have not been touched??

I have seen posts regarding similar issue on other forums but have as yet not been able to resolve the issue

    Any assistance is greatly appreciated

Moving one user should not have resulted in anything else happening to other mailboxes, unless those mailboxes have that mailbox in their additional mailbox list.

Personally I think it is a coincidence.
Which version of Outlook are you using? If it is 2007, then it may well be autodiscover causing problems with the introduction of Exchange 2007 in to the domain.

Re: authentication problem after mailbox move to Exchange server 2007

The error started immediately after the mailbox move was complete.
the user logged out and back into outlook (which is 2007)

overnight, we managed to get the problem resolved - it seemed to be a replication error. All the other users could log on to exchange, but as soon as the user who's mailbox had been moved, opened outlook, it prompted for a password. Which then again resulted in all the users being asked for their passwords.

If it is possible that it is the Autodiscover, what would you suggest I investigate?
      regards

You should check that you have a 3rd Party UC (or SAN) certificate with all the correct fields such as server NETBIOS name, internal fQDN, external FQDN, autodiscover.yourdomain.com etc.

See the whitepaper for more info:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../bb332063.aspx

Then attach this to the Exchange services and make sure all the URL's setup within Exchange are correct.

You can test this with Outlook open, go to Outlook icon in system tray --> Hold ctrl and right click --> Test auto-configuration. It will show you any errors.

Re: authentication problem after mailbox move to Exchange server 2007

Was the routing group connector between 2003 and 2007 still there when the error occured?

If you remove this, it can cause these prompts because outlook cannot find the old exchange server to find the mailbox has now moved, and so it doesnt know what to do with itself.

Did you try creating a new outloom profile pointing to the 2003 server manually, you would probably find that would have worked,.

Have users got Outlook over HTTP enabled? pointing to the old server?

Also if your time/date on the PC's are out of sync, or the exchange server is out of sync, they will get logon prompts.

Also, if your certificate is incorrect, it will not prompt you for username/password, but you will get certificate warnings.

          Hope this helps
