  • Migrating from Ex2003 to 2007

In the past I've referenced this article when migrating clients from Exchange 2003 to 2007 SP1, and it has worked very well: http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/...007-Part1.html

I'm about to migrate an Exchange 2003 Enterprise server with separate front and back-end servers to a single Exchange 2007 SP1 server, and was wondering if this document applies as well? I understand that the port forwarding settings will be consolidated into one server.

Also, the existing front-end Ex2003 box has a customized OWA home page. I'm hoping the migration will conculde with the default OWA look and feel, and not the customized one.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks

The article should be ok. When you move the mailboxes to the Exchange 2007 server, clients should automatically be redirected to the new server. However, you may find the redirect from OWA 2003 may cause a bit of confusion, so worth testing. You may need to give or allocate a new shortcut to the 2007 OWA. Give it a test with one mailbox when you are ready to start moving them.

Also, keep in mind that OWA 2007 will use Forms authentication by default, different to Exchange 2003 defaults and https. You also need to allocate an SSL certificate to Exchange 2007 ideally from a company such as Go Dadddy. If you only use Exchange 2007 internally, your own CA is enough.

Edit: This was my transition. It is worth reviewing.

You either have to remove the frontend server or deploy a CAS server to replace it. You cannot use an Exchange 2003 frontend server with Exchange 2007.

Thanks Sembee. I'll keep this in mind myself. So upgrade Front End Servers first and then backend?

There are no upgrade options. That is why I said REPLACE.

Sorry, I meant replace. I realise you can't upgrade.
