  • troubleshooting Managed Folder Assistant

I have a some simple Managed content settings for two default folders; Deleted Items, and Junk E-mail.

The managed content settings are to purge email from the deleted items 60 days after the item is placed into the folder. And for the Junk email folder to purge email 90 days after it has been moved to the folder.

Created a Managed folder mailbox policy and added both of the default folders (deleted and junk) to the policy. Assigned the policy to a group of users in a storage group. And in the shell ran start-managedfolderassistant to kick it off.

The issue is it starts, to process a mailbox and never finishes? Here the log for today, I ran the command 4 times.

    #Software: Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Server
    #Version: 8.0.0.0
    #Log-type: Managed Folder Assistant
    #Date: 2009-08-21T04:44:41.514Z
    #Fields: Date-Time,Managed-Folder-Assistant-Action,Folder-Full-Path,Mailbox-Owner,Message-Subject,Message-Received-Date,Message-Sender,Message-Internet-Id,Message-Class,Retention-Action-Taken,Journaling-Destination-Address,
    2009-08-21T04:44:41.514Z,,,,,,,,,,,Starting to process mailbox: USER1:22b338a3-6ca6-4444-bfb3-85acf203292b:/o=WOCCU/ou=First Administrative Group/cn=Recipients/cn=USER1

    2009-08-21T20:24:57.192Z,,,,,,,,,,,Starting to process mailbox: USER1:22b338a3-6ca6-4444-bfb3-85acf203292b:/o=WOCCU/ou=First Administrative Group/cn=Recipients/cn=USER1
    2009-08-21T20:31:02.145Z,,,,,,,,,,,Starting to process mailbox: USER1:22b338a3-6ca6-4444-bfb3-85acf203292b:/o=WOCCU/ou=First Administrative Group/cn=Recipients/cn=USER1

As you can see above it is stuck on 1 user? But is is not always the case, in the past it would list all of the user accounts it was applied to just like above. But I have never seen it say finished or anything in any of the logs.

I also do watch the event longs and get event ID 9021 from MSExchange Assistants that it is starting to process; then just 15 seconds later get another Event ID 9022 saying it has finished. I dont see how this is possible considering it is applied to 77 mailboxes. And when looking in my mailbox I can see I have mail items in the deleted items folder since April, well over 60 days old.

Do managed folder policies not apply to mail items that were previously in the folder before it became managed?

I have the exact same problem. It suddenly stopped working about two months ago.
