  • Non email accounts appearing in GAL

    Hi all,

I created some service accounts for backup, scheduled tasks etc. I copied the admin account and removed the groups not required.

The service accounts all appear in the GAL although there's no email accounts for them.

I've ran get-mailbox and get-mailcontact but they either return nothing or and error.

Can anyone explain how I can removed the accounts from the GAL.

    Thanks

    Robert

Mail enabled objects appear in the GAL. Therefore the objects must be mail enabled.
You will need to mail disable them, then wait for the OAB to be updated in the clients.

If you need the object to be mail enabled, but don't want the object to be listed in the GAL, then set the option to hide the object from the Address Book on the Exchange Advanced tab of the object's properties.

I'm assuming this option is still available in Exchange 2007?

It is, yes. Unlike Exchange 2003 though, if you hide a mailbox from the GAL you can no longer open that mailbox within Outlook, which can be a pain at times.

Just not enough of a pain for me to do anything about it

Re: Non email accounts appearing in GAL

          Thanks guys for your help.

I found a clever little powershell script here that displays any non mail enabled account and lets you mail enable them. All the service accounts I created were there. After I supplied the appropriate email address I mail enabled the accounts. I then hid the accounts from the GAL using EMC.

I'll wait until the OAB updates then try and issue disable-mailuser on the service accounts.

I'll let you know what happens

          Thanks again
