  • Licensing Question: Mix of User and Device CALs?

We have an EX07 enviroment and currently have 450 user licenses. Our administration passed down a order to allow email access to EVERYONE in our organization an email address.

Our current 450 users, have a dedicated PC and dedicated account to them, which is why they have a user CAL. The remaining 550 users in our organization use 150 shared computers and that's why a device CAL makes more sense.

Is is possible to mix and match user and device CALs? Or once you start with User CALs you must continue with User CALs?

Re: Licensing Question: Mix of User and Device CALs?

As far as I know it is acceptable to mix user and device CALs - if not, we need to have words with our licence supplier

Microsoft do however recommend choosing one or the other and sticking to it, mainly because it just makes life so much easier when you have to keep track of your usage. As long as you know exactly what's going on though, then you should be fine.

With that many licences though I'm guessing you have a volume licence? The best people to ask would be your supplier. If they don't know, then you need a new one

No one on this site is qualified to answer your question. The only people who can do that are Microsoft. You will need to ask them and get the answer in writing.
If you were to be audited, and told the auditor that someone on a forum said it was OK, you would be laughed at, and then hit with a big fine.

Perhaps the URL should have been https://licensing.microsoft.com

Service is presently unpredictable though - "scheduled maintenance" again.

As far as I am aware, that is not the site for the information on Microsoft licensing. It is the site to manage your existing licences.

Microsoft licencing is managed through the pages for each specific product.
