  • Exchange 2007 GAL with Outlook 2003

We have an Exchange 2007 server with Outlook 2007 on the desktops and all works exactly as expected. We also have three terminal servers running Outlook 2003. When users use Outlook 2007 on their desktops, they can all see and use the GAL. When they log on to the terminal server (with the same credentials as they use on the desktop) they cannot see the GAL in Outlook 2003.

Is anybody able to give me a clue as to what is going on? Is this a known issue with a fix? I cannot find anything on the MS KB or the net generally.

    Thanks

    Colin

It depends on whether the desktop clients are using cached mode or not.
IF they are then they are using the OAB, not the live GAL.

Can the users see the GAL through OWA?

    Simon.

      Thanks Simon,

If they login with the OWA then they see the GAL okay. They are using cached mode and in Outlook 2007 can see what Outlook calls the Global Address List (which I assume is the OAB?) ... clicking on the address book icon on the toolbar shows Global Address Book and Contacts.

On Outlook 2003 they click on the address book icon and can only see Contacts.

      Cheers

Hmmm ... still can't get this to work.

        To summarise:

        1. If users use Outlook 2007 on Workstation then things work as expected.

        2. Using Outlook 2003 (with all the patches) on the terminal server they cannot see GAL/OAB (Outlook calls it GAL). This is the same whether using cached or non cached.

The odd thing is that it does work for 2 out of about 100 users but I cannot see any difference in the settings (same OU etc.)

        Any suggestions most gratefully received.

You can't use cached mode on the terminal server.
Therefore clients on the terminal server will using the live GAL rather than the OAB copy of the GAL.

Ensure that the Outlook Address Book service is installed in the profile.

            Cheers Simon,

That makes sense. I will check the Outlook Address Book service is installed.

            Appreciate your sharing your knowledge.

            Regards
