  • EX 2007 Enterprise CCR with EX 2003 HT-CAS?

Is it possible to have an Exchange 2007 SP1 CCR (+SCR) and have the HT-CAS servers be Exchange 2003?

AFAIK, it should be ok. I don't believe CCR and SCR relies on the Exchange 2007 Hub Tranpsort and Client Access Server roles. You need to ensure you have 1 database per storage group. This includes the Public Folder database being in its own Storage Group to ensure the mailbox stores can replicate.

I am really suprised that I haven't seen that brought up much, since Microsoft stopped it's upgrade policy, reusing the 2K3 licenses for roles other than the mailbox seems to be a no brainer.

      Would I loose any functionality?
      Thank you,

Not AFAIK. You just won't gain. Some have the file witness share as the Hub Transport holder but doesn't have to be.

What would I gain by have Exchange 2K7 on the HT-CAS? Would this be considered a mixed environment that would limit me?
          Thank you,

It's more scalable, can utilise more memory with the 64 bit edition, enhanced OWA to name but some of them.

During a transition to Exchange 2007, there will initially be a mixed environment. You of course can't have those roles on the mailbox server, if your using CCR and SCR.

Is there any documentation out there on how to install the HT-CAS roles on an Exchange 2003 server?
              Thank you,

Not sure what you mean but Exchange 2007 roles will need to be installed on an Exchange 2007 server.

that was my original question, If I could use my 2003 Exchange licenses on the HT-CAS server so I didn't have to buy another 2007 license.

Now that I know that EX 2K7 is required for that server, can it be the standard version even though my mailbox servers are Enterprise?
                  Thank you,

I see. I thought your referring to the fact that roles of Client access were Exchange 2003. If your using Exchange 2007 for your mailbox store roles, AFAIK, that license will cover you installing the CAS and HT on the now Exchange 2003 servers. However, you will need a 64 bit OS and hardware.

You cannot use Exchange 2003 for OWA etc with Exchange 2007 mailboxes.
The simple rule is that the CAS (or frontend server) must the SAME or HIGHER than the mailbox server.

You could put the mailboxes on to Exchange 2003 and have Exchange 2007 CAS and Hub Transport, but not the other way round.

For Exchange 2007 to work you MUST have at least one Hub Transport and one CAS server. Your Exchange 2003 licences are useless to you once you move mailboxes on to Exchange 2007.

Thank you both. Just to clarify, I am going to be 2007 across the board now. My final question (for this thread..lol) is:

Is it ok to have Exchange Enterprise on the mailbox servers and standard for any other role servers, i.e. HT-CAS? Do I loose any functionality if I do this?
                        Thank you,

                        Marc

There is no functionality difference between Enterprise and Standard. They are the same code.
The only difference is that with Enterprise you can use clustering and have more stores. Those are mailbox functions. For hub and CAS standard edition is fine.
