  • Upgrade before or after ADMT??

We currently are sitting @ Exchange 2003 SP1 (mixed mode) and plan on upgrading to Exchange 2007. We are also planning on creating a new root forest and moving our existing domain into that forest.

My question is whether I should upgrade Exchange before the migration (preferred) or stand up Exchange 2007 in the new forest and then migrate the current domain into it, which will be much more envolved and push the timeline back.

    Thank you for your input.
    Thank you,

    Marc

To the best of my knowledge you can't move domains in to a new forest. The only time domains are added to the forest is during the point of creation.
If you want to cross-migrate then you will need to upgrade to Exchange 2003 SP2 at the least.

Sorry for my poor terminology. I meant build up the new forest with new domains and migrate over to them. My question is should I stand up the new 2007 servers in the existing domain (upgrade), and then migrate or should I migrate from 2003 to the new forest with 2007?
      Thank you,

      Marc

As you can't pick up servers from one domain and put them in another, there seems little point in doing the upgrade to your existing environment, other than bringing it up to the minimum level to do a cross forest migration.

Re: Upgrade before or after ADMT??

We have stood up the new domain w/ Exchange 2007. Is it possible to have a period of coexistence between both domain/orgs where my MX records would point to the new 2007 Exchange server and if the account doesn't exist, it would forward the mail to the 2003 Exchange server?

Or am I stuck with a big move everyone at one time scenario?

Will setting up the domain as an Internal relay work for this?

            Thanks again.

              ..upon further testing...

Setting the domain to be an Internal Relay domain works fine. If the account is not found in the new Exchange org, it forwards it through the send connector to the other org across domains. Here is the link to technet:
