  • 2007 + 2003 servers with smart host can't route to 2007 server

I have an issue with an Exchange 2003 and an Exchange 2007 not "talking" to each other. If I send an email from a user that is on the 2003 box to a user that has been migrated to the 2007 box I get a delayed message and eventually a failure. Both machines are using a smarthost to our ISP. On the other hand, I can send an email from a user on the 2007 box to the 2003 box with no delay.

I assume I am missing something on the 2003 box? Thanks for any help!

Are both servers on the same domain?

Yes they are. Same Exchange organization, domain, etc.

Where is the smart host set?
If it is set on the SMTP virtual server then it MUST be removed. You will need to set the smart host on an SMTP Connector instead, which Exchange 2007 will see as a Send Connector it cannot modify.

You have no choice, but to remove the smart host from the SMTP virtual server.

Thanks Sembee. That was the issue. I took the smarthost off of the default SMTP Virtual Server and mail flowed.

I assume the best place to set that in the future is the Connector opposed to the SMTP Virtual Server?

            Always. Without exception.
