  • Why can Mail Enabled Distrubution Group only receive internal messages?

    I have some Mail-Enabled Universal Distribution Groups and Mail-Enabled Universal Security Groups setup. They work internally ( I can email them from my mailbox that resides on the same Exchange 2007 server), but when I try to send mail to their smtp addresses from an outside address (I'm testing from my gmail account) The messages are either bouncing back:

    Technical details of permanent failure:
    Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 550 550 5.1.1 User unknown (state 14).

    Or the messages just never arrive.

      Yes, I did that. But I still can't email them from an email address outside of the organization.

        I am pretty sure that isn't an Exchange error. DO you have something else in front of Exchange? Filtering product for example?

          Yes there are 100% chances that in your organization there are some relay third party for filtering. And i hope the account is not created at their end.
          Earlier i have faced this similar issue, based on experience commenting this soultions.

            We are running GFI Mail Essentials and Mail Security on our Edge servers. I will research to see if they block mail-enabled distribution lists.

              Have a look at the queue view of GFI. I wouldn't be surprised if that is the issue. I have had strange issues in the past with GFI where I have had to reinstall.

              Do you forward emails regarded ap spam to another mailbox for checking? It may be worth considering whilst you test.
