  • Exchange 2007 deleted item retention

    Hi all,
yep another newbie, my first post and 3 questions
    Exchange 2007 deleted item retention

In Exchange 2007 there is a setting

    Mailbox properties--mailbox settings- storaga quotas

under deleted item retention which says "Do not permanently delete items until you backup the database"

Now I have 3 questions about this.

    1. Can this be done on all the mailboxs rather then indivisual mailbox?

    2. how does exchange know that its been backup specally when everyone use third party backup softwares.

    3. does this still apply if i delete the email 5 mins after I have recieved?

My exchange 07 is running on 2003 server

    any help would be appriciated

    Hi!

    1. I dont know, maybe there is some powershell command

    2. Backup software must be Exchange aware (If full backup is performed log files are deleted and you see info on last backup on mailbox datbase properties)

    3. Yes

Test it. Setup a test mailbox, send it a test email, delete it and backup your database.

        1) You can certainly set retention at the database level, over ridden by maibox level settings
        2) As said, backup app must be "Exchange Aware"
        3) Yes
