  • New server, going to migrate from 2003 to 2007...what about BES?

I have a single server setup and looking to move to a two server setup with one file/print and one Exchange. Currently everything is on one and it's not all that fast with the 60GB (and growing rapidly) private store. So I want to put in a server with 8GB RAM and RAID 10.

Was considering going to Windows 2003 Enterprise with Exchange 2003 Enterprise but figure it makes more sense to go to at least Windows 2003 or 2008 x64 and Exchange 2007 since Exchange 2003 won't do anything with RAM over 4GB.

Figure either migration would be pretty easy but I'm concerned about BlackBerry Enterprise Server. I know there are versions of BES that work with 2007 but I don't know if I would be running BES on the new server x64 server or the old x86 server.

Has anyone does such a migration?

You haven't provided enough information to provide a good answer.
BES is best on its own server. Then you don't have to worry about compatibility issues.

While Exchange 2003 cannot use any more than 4gb of RAM, it doesn't need it. I have run 500 users on 2gb of RAM without any issues.

Where you would make a saving is in the versions. Exchange 2007 allows an unlimited database size, which would mean you could use a standard edition of Exchange 2007. To do the same with Exchange 2003 you need Enterprise edition.

So I just need to make sure I have the right CDO and other DLLs on the Exchange 2007 server and BES is installed normally on the BES server.

I donít think your users have 8GB mailboxes with NO folders. Everything in the inbox. Itís sad. No matter how many times I tell them, they refuse to put things into folders.

I will probably go with Exchange 2007. Thanks.

8gb of messages in the inbox will have significant performance hits. Although it is number of items, not size that is the issue. You should be looking to keep the number of items below 5000 items.

I've had that fight more times than I can count. I think it's insane to have a 65gb private store for 25 users.
