  • Copy users from one distribution group to another

What I need to do is
Take the users from one distribution group and add them to another distribution group. The basic need for this is a school that has users in Year 8 DL needs to now be in Year 9 DL

I can't seem to get the PS command to work
    I have tried
    get-distributiongroupmember -id "YR8" | Add-DistributionGroup -Id "Yr9"
    I get an error with this + Get-DistributionGroupMember -Identity Yr8 | Add-DistributionGroupMember <<<<
    -Identity Yr9 -WhatIf
Add-DistributionGroupMember : The input object cannot be bound to any parameter
s for the command either because the command does not take pipeline input or th
e input and its properties do not match any of the parameters that take pipelin
    e input.

So I tried get-group and piping that to add-dirtributiongroupmember and it come up with the same error.

    Any idea's?

    Hi,

Why don't you goto the properties of the Year 8, Distribution Group --> "Member of" tab --> Add the Year9 group.

    Let me know

I suspect because the new Year 8 group has new members.
Might save hassle if you create groups based on joining year or leaving year?

but for your problem you should be able to use csv files maybe
      http://forums.msexchange.org/Export-...0440023/tm.htm
export it to csv then import it to the new group

sorry I don't have the exact command to hand though.
      cheers

Re: Copy users from one distribution group to another

Why not rename the Year 8 group to Year 9 and create a new Year 8

When I administered school systems, I used the notional year of joining as this remained static through a pupil's career
