Several of my users email in their inbox are showing as read when they are unread. Does anyone know why this is happening?

Messages will get marked as read if you have the preview pane showing.
How many users are stating this is happening?
        cheers

Thank you so much for the information; is there a way short of closing the preview pane to stop this?

Re: Outlook inbox messages showing read when they are unread

Try Tools (menu) > Options > Other (tab) > Reading Pane.. (button)

then uncheck "Mark items as read when viewed in the reading pane"

Re: Outlook inbox messages showing read when they are unread

In that case, you'll also need to remove the checkmark for "Mark item as read when the selection changes". Is what is happening marking them "Read" when your selected highlight moves off that email? If so, that second checkbox does what it says.

The first checkbox is for when the selection stays on that email, and after x seconds it marks it as "Read".

So I think you need to take them both off.
                      Best wishes,
